    Hi Guys
I use Media Player Classic Home Cinema
    And it works just great.

But I have one file that wont play the sound.

I wonder if installing the K-Lite codec pack would fix the problem?

I know it is supposed to be a good codec pack, but I don't want to risk mucking up my system.

Is it easy to uninstall ?

    Should I create a restore point ?

Might be a better idea to check the file in MediaInfo to see what the audio is and maybe just find and install just that ONE codec needed instead of installing a 1000 different codecs and fubaring you system with a ton of crap you will never use and avoiding conflicts.

3rd party codec packs may have made sense in windows up to XP. They're not such a good idea now.

The microsoft tech support page specifically recommends you not install any 3rd party codecs in windows 7. For good reason. Many have compatibility problems, and can definitely cause instability. Klite is known for this.

It is rather annoying that microsoft says that and then program installers in windows can install those crap codecs with little if any warning. But that's microsoft.

My solution in windows 7 was getting rid of all that stuff, using codec tweak tool to make sure everything in the registry pointed to directshow/directx, and using programs that didn't need that crap.

Which left me with smplayer and vlc. I've never had a video or audio file one of them couldn't play well. Smplayer is actually better than vlc there. I still use them in linux. Potplayer doesn't need that crap either but I didn't use it much, though I never uninstalled it.

  8. Yep. Using MPC HC only and I have played all common media formats without installing any codec-packs, not even FFDShow. The only time it doesn't play a file is when I was trying to open a word document with it.

I personally suggest to not installing any codec-packs out there. I've learnt it the hard way. Almost all media players nowadays support widely known media formats anyway.

If you don't mind though, convert the file to another format that you know your player will play. Otherwise, we're still open here.
