Can't find track...

I'm trying to rip a trailer from a DVD, but every program I've tried to use has been unable to locate the track. In my DVD player, the trailer will play without any track information and in every DVD ripping program I've tried, only the main program is visible. (I'm on a Mac, if it matters.) Any ideas how I can locate and rip the trailer?

I have a Macbook Pro. I've tried MacTheRipper, MacX DVD Ripper, Handbrake, MPEG Streamclip (which gives me an error message). What else do you need to know?

The disc? The ISOBuster/ImgBurn/other layout of the VIDEO_TS? The mediainfo readout of the main track (or an MPEG2Cut2 clip of it)?

Plus, you're on a Mac, so already you are at a major disadvantage. Sorry, but for this kind of work, that's the truth.

I don't really know what that stuff is. It's a DVD from 1998. MGM Home video. The VIDEO_TS folder looks like this, if you're looking for the file structure:

VTS_01_0.VOB

does the trailer play and then the movie? it might just be part of the main movie and you'll have to cut it out.

Nope. It's an separate track somewhere on the disc. I ripped the whole movie just to be sure.

This would be dead simple on a PC. Then you could use VobBlanker or PGCEdit or other programs to find it. Do you have anything that can show you the different PGCs (aka Titles) on the DVD?

This should really be in the Mac Forum. Then others that actually use those computers might know what's available to help you out.

That doesn't really answer aedipuss's question. It could still be in the same PGC as the main movie, but in its own cell or chapter. When you play that VTS_01_1.VOB, does it play first, before the movie begins? If so maybe Macs have some sort of a VOB cutter available to allow you to cut it out. My guess is that it's either at the very beginning of VTS_01_1.VOB or the very end of VTS_01_5.VOB. If so, it shouldn't be too hard to find by playing VOBs and not the DVD. Then all you'll need is a cutter to extract it.

Oh, so it's part of the VTS_01_0.VOB? Interesting. Find a cutter and extract it. Or take the DVD to a friend with a PC and extract it using one of the many ways people with PCs have to get it. Burn it to disc and take it home and put it in your Mac.

You said MPEG StreamClip gave you some sort of an error. What happens if you try to open just that menu VOB to cut out the trailer?

yes, tell us what film it is and perhaps someone here might have the same disc and be able to help you out with the trailer.

@Woody, do you really want our help? I have already, twice, asked for info. You have yet to even tell us the movie (which COULD make a difference).

And Macs can and do often double as PC's, so the good suggestions so far should not be that quickly set aside.

Copy the the VTS_01_0.VOB to a folder without any other VOB files. Then open the VOB with MPEG Streamclip. Fix any timecode errors if the program suggests to do so. Set a selection with the Select In and Select Out points. Save as MPEG. Done.
