  1. story: i was playing a pc game and was using hypercam 3. just as i was about to reach the end of the film, hypercam tells me that it stopped working and i had to force close the application. when i went to check on the file, its summary says
    • Type: video clip
      size: 1.17 gb

instead of deleting the file like i do with all the other bad/broken ones, i did a google search to see how i could resolve the "broken file" problem using the search terms "is there a way to fix a broken video clip"

i come across http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/repair_broken_or_corrupt_avi_files.cfm which lists 3 programs

i try the first program DivFix++ using version 0.34. i add the file the list since its the only file. uncheck all boxes (cut out bad parts, keep original file, recover from key frames). i click the button "strip index" and i get the following error
    • Striping index at file: 2013_05_09_17_03_54_804x624.avi
Error: Input's idx1 section not found!
      Error occured at striping index

i then try another application VirtualDub 1.9.11. when i go to add file and open the movie file, the following error occurs
    • the file c:\2013_05_09...54_804x624.avi is of an unknown or unsupported file type

i looked on a few other sites and most of them suggested using VirtualDub or DivFix

i know nothing of coding or how to fix the problem myself. i also have a backup copy of the file in case something goes wrong

i even registered on videohelp to be able to request help

my question for the community of videohelp is "is there any software out there that can fix any video file" or "is there a way to get the avi clip playable again"

note: i cannot be able to remake the clip again

    all help is appreciated

    Hi morningfrost

Looks you already used some good clues to fix that problem. An easy check is try to open the file using VLC (although guess you already did it). If there's some lucky VLC would reindex the file and make it playable. If not then I would suggest you to think in a professional repair service like MP4repair.org. There you can diagnose the file and get some preview to decide whether is worth to be repaired or not. Best of luck!

  3. Repair Score: 50%

MP4Repair.org has not found any known media type in the file.
Nothing indicates that the file cannot contain a movie, so the chances of repair are low to average.
