I am using Dazzle to capture old home videos off of a Samsung VHS player. I have been able to do a couple of videos so far but I have run into an issue I have been unable to solve.

Some of my videos have "Hi Fi" that appears on the screen and as soon as it does, all I get is white noise for audio. The video still plays and looks as good as one can expect from VHS format, but the audio just sounds like you tried to tune in a channel on your TV that has no signal.

Any idea what I am dealing with here?

    Thanks,
    CF

  2. Check the audio settings on the VCR, you need to have it set to both or at least change it to HIFI for those tapes that need it.

Perhaps you should list the model of the Samsung VCR. If it's extremely old or extremely cheaply made I suppose it might not understand HiFi audio at all. Someone might be able to tell from the model number.

Nic2k4, that is what I was afraid of. Now time to tear up the house trying to find that old remote. Jman, it's a DVD/VCR combo and not that old. I was more afraid that Dazzle wouldn't be able to handle the audio itself or that it was an issue with it being connected by USB or somesuch.

Are you too lazy or too stupid to look up the model number?

    Either way, I'm done here.

I am at work, actually, and it is at home.

The best solution would be to find the remote and see if you can select the audio yourself....or DE-select "Hi Fi" audio. Home movies are not Hi-Fi anyway.

How vicious. Your post leaves a nasty taste in the mouth.

No one is forcing you to reply to threads.

You certainly don't know how to make a newbie feel welcome.

I mostly ignored it. Some people have issues that even the med's can't control.

I thought it was odd because I think it was from a Hand Held that we used to own that claimed it could record Hi Fi sound. The biggest issue is finding that old remote, as the front of the Combo does not have a way to get to the menu that I can see. Wish me luck.

I've come across several tapes that my Philips/JVC S-VHS machine chokes on. It does almost exactly what you are describing....it gets confused and switches between HiFi and Normal and the difference is dramatic. My only solution was to manually set it on "Normal" audio.

Mine are. At least some video cameras recorded hi-fi stereo tracks.

Most hi-fi stereo VCRs let you select which audio you want to listen to, but some later ones only have auto (i.e. hi-fi stereo if it thinks its there, linear mono if it isn't).

    Cheers,
    David.
