Hi hope this is in the right section.

I've got an mpg2 video file I'm having aspect ratio problems with. I think the video is 720x480 but it always shows on screen as 540x480 and looks stretched horizontally.

    Gspot shows:
    Dimensions:
    pic: 720x480 seq ext 540x480 4:3 ratio
    sar 1.500 3:2 par 0.889 (8:9) dar 1.333 (4:3)

is there a quick way to fix this? When I use vlc and manually choose 4:3 ratio - the video looks normal.

Here are the first few hex values of the file which show the 720x480, 4:3 and 29.97 settings. How do I reset the sq ext value?

You can try dvdpatcher. Make a backup of your mpg file first.

  3. Your 720x480 file has the display aspect ratio set to 4:3. But the sequence display extension tells the player that that 4:3 image is contained in a 540x480 portion of the frame. That means the full 720x480 frame contains a 16:9 display aspect ratio. Many players do not respect the sequence display extension.

Got it fixed - thanks guys. dvd patcher didn't work. I tried another tool - Restream - and using the remove sequence extension option and now after remuxing - everything looks great. Thanks for explaining why it was doing that. Really strange. Now it displays in the right aspect every time.

Thanks for all of your help.

    Great.

Didn't know restream had the remove sequence extension option. Adding it to the https://www.videohelp.com/tools/Restream description also.

  6. This is my first message here, excuse me if i'm doing something wrong...
and excuse me for my bad English...
    I've had the same situation before and found a detailed explanation in this page;
    http://www.dvmp.co.uk/mod-video-file-format.htm
    just as jagabo said
And found the reason of the mismatched Aspect Ratio information reported by Mediainfo...
Seems the mpg2 encoder causing this (for my problem)
I dont know why the "portion" is not taken as the FULL frame (480x576)
Below is the screenshot of my situation...
