Are you talking about a download page for WMP? If yes, what about this:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-GB/windows/download-windows-media-player -
For videos then yes, I agree with you. But WMP is actually a pretty good music player for typical people like me. At least it's built-in and had a better playlist than MPC-HC.
No, I was talking about a link/article that said WMP is abandoned. It marked as "No Longer Developed" in VideoHelp Tools/Software Downloads section. -
WMP is even worse as an audio player than for video. No built in FLAC support? Idiotic.
No flv or mkv support? Asinine.
And they want you to pay for it in windows 8? That's the best laugh of all.
I'm not one of those linux users who just hates microsoft. They actually make some very good software. But their media software isn't good. I don't understand why it's so pitiful but it is. -
Instead of Windows 8's version Media Player, which has become a music-only player, Microsoft expects Windows 8 users with the standard version of the OS to employ the Video ap to play video files (although it won't play DVDs). They want you to pay for Windows 8 Pro or the Windows 8 Pro Pack, plus Windows Media Center, which returns the ability to play media files (but not DVDs) to Windows Media Player as a side effect. ...but since Windows Media Center plays DVDs and video files, if someone has paid for it, that is what they would probably use, unless they need or want to use another player for some things. For example, Blu-ray playback requires third-party software.
Although some other media center software offers a nicer interface and more features for enjoying a collection of miscellaneous media files, Windows Media Center is actually worth having for its TV recorder/PVR feature, which is very easy to set up and use if you live in a country for which Microsoft's free TV guide service is available for the kind of TV source you want to record. -
Well, it can play MP3 and AAC. That's enough for most people I believe. =V
Lol, really? That kinda reminds me of Windows 7 Starter Edition. I mean seriously, what kind of OS that doesn't allow you to change wallpaper. A completely nonsensical marketing trick to me. -
Huh.... I never had a problem changing wallpapers in W7.......
And to compare that to a media player that basically sucks and plays only the garbage the mass clueless sheople use.....
Oy Vey!!!
LOL!!! -
Tonight I found out that video decoder issues are the source of my problems with Windows 8's version of Media Player not playing video. I had tried playing some MPEG-2 files on a PC running the standard version of Windows 8, and Media Player wouldn't play the videos, but it never gave me a warning about not having the needed MPEG-2 decoder installed, so I thought it was crippled for all kinds of video. ...but that isn't really true. A little while ago I tried playing an .mpg file on a Windows 8 laptop using the Video app, which promptly gave me a warning that I didn't have the necessary video decoder installed. ...so I tried playing a .wmv file with Windows Media Player, and it played. I tried Googling to find out what was going on, and it turns out that Microsoft decided that the they didn't want to pay for technology licenses to add MPEG-2 decoding or DVD playback to Windows 8. They figured that at this point many of their customers didn't watch MPEG-2 video files or play DVDs, and those who did could find other software to use instead of Media Player or the Video ap.

@ GrafZeppelin:
both FLV and MKV are old formats already; so, if Microsoft has never cared about adding to WMP "native" support for them until now, ......
Also, keep in mind that WMP stands for WindowsMedia Player, it has never meant Windows MediaPlayerBeing as clear as possible, WindowsMedia is WMVs/ASFs plus WMAs.
The so-called "advanced users" have several reasons to dislike WMP: the interface has become too carnivalish, the audio visualizations suck and are turned ON by default, you are not allowed to know what filters are being used in the playback chain, etc. For audio-only files, foobar2000 and Winamp still are the winners.
Just my 5 cents ( yes$S, inflation is evil).

But were you using Windows 7 Starter? Starter is a lower-priced stripped-down version of Windows 7 that lacks some of the features Home Premium has, such as Aero, but can run on less powerful computers. I think the only way for consumers to get Starter is to buy it pre-installed on a mass-produced computer.
You are right. Like most of Microsoft's free Windows programs, Windows Media Player, only provide very basic functionality, but since that really is all that the vast majority of Windows users want or need, and it is reasonably easy to use, it has been fairly successful.
WMP is what my sister's family tends to use. As long as they are happy with WMP, I'm not going to try to convince them to switch to something with a more complicated set of playback options.
