I downloaded an avi. video and it only plays for a minute until the visual freezes, but the audio continues. I can't skip ahead of the video because the same thing happens, only the audio plays while the visual is frozen. Any ideas?

I used VLC and it worked, but my main player is MPCHC so I don't know why it didn't work. Also, I keep on getting an error message when I put the file into VirtualDub. Nonetheless, here is the mediainfo report.

VLC can often play damaged videos
What is the error message when loaded in vdub ?
You can try divfix++ to see if it can "fix" the video . Make a "copy" or backup of your video first before trying
Unless you failed to post the entire report, I think it's incomplete because the reported video & audio data rates don't add up. 260+130 = 390, but the reported filesize is 453Mib . Now mediainfo isn't always that reliable, but you can try running it through gspot and see what it says
File size : 453 MiB

1) Hmm, that's odd. The MPCHC on my laptop can play the original file (on my PC I had to convert it to avi, using File Factory, to get it to play), albeit the video is out of sync on whatever player I use. However, an error message by AVI Chunk Viewer (never heard of it) pops up before playing on MPCHC.
Here's a screenshot I found:
2) The vdub error is: "No audio compressor could be found to decompress the source audio format
source format. (source format tag: 2000)".
3) gspot report:
Container:
File Length Correct
DivX Style "packed bitstream" AVI
OpenDML (AVI v2.0)
Interleave: 68 ms (1.0 v.frames), preload=3296
Audio frames: Aligned on interleaves
Video: 260 MB (57.54%)
Audio: 129 MB (28.66%)
AVI Overhead: 62.4 MB (13.79%)
*I've attached a screenshot for further elaboration.
*I've also attached the txt. file of mediainfo. -
The vdub "error" just means you are missing an audio decoder. Install AC3ACM
Although gspot says "File Length Correct", I still have a feeling it's damaged, because that seems to me a disproportionate amount of "AVI Overhead" . When you said VLC played it correctly, did everything play correctly? You can seek all the way through to the end ?
What version of MPCHC can play it successfully, and what version cannot ? How are they configured (are they using internal filters and codecs, or using external eg.. ffdshow) ? -
Typical AVI container overhead might be 0.5-1.5% , not 13.79% .
You might try downloading it again - it certainly possible this is a corrupted download -
The MPCHC on my PC is a standalone (internal filters), while the one on my laptop came with the K-Lite Codec Pack (ffdshow audio/video decoder etc.). The one that plays it successfully (accompanied with the AVI Chunk Viewer error message) is the latter.
Virtual Dub works fine now. Thoroughly skipping through, VLC takes a second or two to load the visual, but nonetheless it works to the end. Divfix found an error and cut out a good 10 minutes of the video when it tried to fix it. -
Well, I put the file in vdub and saved it as a direct stream copy. It opened fine on MPCHC without error messages/freezes/lags. But the file size is smaller and I think it cut back 10 seconds on the audio. This isn't worth the headache.
Edit: Managed to sync it with vdub, well sorta. Anyway, thank you for your help. Greatly appreciated.Last edited by MichaelCY; 1st May 2013 at 20:09.
