Fraps and windows movie maker and vegas pro 11 quality

hi!

i record gameplay videos with fraps. i then use windows movie maker to add transitions etc and i render (save it) but then the quality of the video goes down. why is that? i used vegas pro 11 and also tried but same result. i have set the best settings for these both. (hd settings)

Because the changes (added transitions) require re-encoding the video. Hence Baldrick's question, hoping that better encoding settings are possible in the tools you're using. It may be a good idea to list the available options also.
