  1. What is the best way to extract a single frame from a Blu-ray with no or least amount of compression? I am getting a frame from a movie printed as a poster for my friends birthday on B0 paper (1.4 METRES WIDE!) so I need the highest quality rip I can possibly get. The place I am getting it printed requires it to be in pdf format and recommends CMYK colour mode. I can probably figure out that part once I have the lossless frame but any recommendations on how to get it to that point would be helpful. I am able to decrypt the Blu-ray with no problems also.

i haven't tested this but it seems to me that you could open up the decrypted bluray with avidemux, use the cut function to choose only one frame (an I frame) of the image you want and then export that using no compression (i believe it would be saved in raw format). i don't know how to go from raw to pdf, i'm guessing most image manipulation apps like paint.net can probably do that.

Don't mean to be negative here but is this legal? I mean are you going to some kind of production house for this large print? Or is this a friend that has a specialized printer at home?

Reason for asking is professional businesses will be forced to follow copyrights and assuming this is a professionally made bluray there will be copyrights involved.

But if this is homemade from a hd handycam or something it will be ok.

I would just make sure you can do this without legal troubles. And as I pointed out if this is a private individual it shouldn't be a problem from a "fair use" aspect. Not making money from it in other words. But if you go to some professional studio there could be implications here for you or for them.

He is talking about making a single poster for a friends birthday party, not making a 1000 copies to sell.

printed as a poster for my friends birthday
I don't think anyone would care.

I used to get special or limited edition 2"/3" CD's that came in little cardboard sleeves.
So I could put them into standard jewel cases I would take the cardboard sleeves to the local printer shop and have them color photocopy them and enlarge them to fit in a standard cd jewel case, then I stored away the original little cardboard sleeves.

I have also taken custom hidef artwork from famous bands and had them made into posters for myself to hang up in frames.
No one is going to care unless you get caught making 1000's of them and start selling them.

  6. You could play the blu-ray in the newest version of VLC and use its snapshot function to take a screenshot of the video. It outputs to PNG.

I tried opening up 3 different blurays and avidemux crashed each time. I updated to latest avidemux with little success I even tried the latest beta build...no dice. I imagine the printscreen method would not be the best way to get the image I want but I gues it is a last resort... Any other program suggestions/ways to get avidemux to work?

As for the legal part I guess I'll just see when I try to get them to print it. Hopefully it will all be okay.

btw this is the picture I am getting printed xD

Just tested it and it works really well! I can also use the frame by frame function to get the perfect frame. This seems like the best option so far. Still open to more suggestions though.

    Thanks!

I don't think anyone has mentioned using virtualdub.

For this test I still have a bluray rip on my harddrive and I used vdubmod and directshowsource to open the largest m2ts file in the stream folder which is the main movie itself. Go to the video tab and select snapshot source frame to save the still. It can go frame by frame.

The file formats you have to choose from are:

    targa
    bmp
    png

This test was using vdubmod 1.5.10.2 and a recent bluray movie release from last year (ripped in whole with anydvdhd).

Another version of virtualdub that has the directshowsource filter may have other file formats that you can save the image too.

    Hope this helps.

    Glad to help.

FYI there is an export image sequence option in virtualdub. I'm not sure if you can set it for a range to extract images or if it just dumps the whole video as a set of stills. A little more research and experimentation would work if you want a slew of stills without manually doing it over a set time period.
