I use a Hauppauge HDPVR 2 to record game play. Thought it came with its own editing software(very limited options), I want to use Ulead VideoStudio SE to edit the videos. I've used this program before, am comfortable with it and it doesnt crash every two minutes like Arcsoft. The problem is that I cannot open the recorded files which are .MP4 in the Ulead software. I have Windows Vista.

I've already tried to convert a file to .avi and open it in Ulead but that also failed. I'd like to avoid that process anyways because it took hours to convert that one file. Someone please point me in the right direction. Thanks.

    Once again....what KIND of "avi"?
AVI is nothing but a container that can "contain" a wide variety of video and audio types/codecs.

That SE (Special Edition) is quite likely to be very old and if it is called Ulead it must be old since Ulead was acquired by Corel years ago. These versions will not recognise anything with a MP4 wrapper and neither will they recognise any HD codecs such as h264/AVC.

To edit these videos you must use software that reads HD formats. You can download trial versions of both current versions of Corel Videostudio and Sony Vegas Studio HD. Then you can see which one suites you best.

Use TsMuxer to remux to a TS file (takes minutes). See if that will load.
If Ulead will only accept SD content and old codecs, and you want to stick with it, use FFmpeg to reduce the files to SD mpg or convert to a DVD with maximum bitrate and combine the resulting vob files to a single mpg file using VobMerge. Either way the quality is going to be reduced. Better to upgrade your editor software as DB83 suggests. Or use the trial version of VideoRedo and see if that is a viable option.

DB83's right. SE was a free now ancient POS. I'm actually surprised it did anything. This can be verified at Corel's VS forum.

ULead Movie Factory 2SE was brilliant by accident. It was the best software to have back in the early days of DVD recorders.
