The DVDFab I previously used ripped and shrank video DVDs, but the latest version does ripping only. Is there a setting in the program to get it to shrink too, or is there an older version available to do that?

If you are a paying customer you may have reason to complain directly to DVDFab. This illustrates exactly why I bought AnyDVD HD instead of DVDFab - I read warnings 2 years ago that DVDFab was bad to nickel and dime their customers to death. It wouldn't surprise me at all if they now made the shrink setting something you have to pay extra for. If you are a paying customer and you have a subscription, you may have a valid complaint if your subscription offered this ability in the past. If you are one of those people who used the free version and you waited a long time to update it, then you are SOL because as far as I can tell they haven't had a truly free version even for just ripping in a while.

A lot of our experienced members say that DVDFab's encoding sucks anyway. I do have to ask - is there some compelling reason you are married to this? DVD Rebuilder is free. If you're willing to sacrifice quality a little for speed, you can use DVD Shrink. I get that they took something away from you that you used to get and I get that it's possibly unfair (if you have a subscription that covered this functionality) but they are taking away something that they're not really very good at anyway.

I just saw your post about your Win 2000 problem and that your PC can boot Win 98 (shudder) as well. Never mind. I understand why you are married to low quality DVDFab encoding. As I said, if you're a paying customer, take it up with them. If you've just been sucking off the former version and hadn't updated it in a long time until now, you're SOL.

DVD Fab does shrink and I find it a good program.
Select DVD5 from the output dropdown list

I downloaded and installed 9.2.2.8 version which has no drop down to select output and has only source and target. However, I uninstalled that version after finding 8.2.2.8 version that I installed, and that version has drop down and does indeed shrink the ripped files.

Edit: Well I just noticed it shows "30 days left for free trial" when exiting this version of DVDFab, but it appeared to be a free version when I downloaded it. Is there a truly free version and not just trial versions?

A portion of DVD Fab will remain available to use for free after the 30 day trial is up. This part is called DVDFab HD Decrypter which can remove almost all DVD protections except for the latest ones, and part of Blu-ray protections. You could call it DVD Fab Lite. It is one of the always free portions of DVDFab. I purchased the software so I have the full version, but you might want to check out jman98's suggestion, DVD Rebuilder. It may better suit your needs.

The latest version is 9034 and it will continue to "copy" full disc and main movie to hard drive even though it has the pop-up dialog box saying how many days you have left.

All the other stuff is payware and as mentioned, there is no need to use it as there are much better freeware tools to be had.

jman has given good advice on other free software.

Did you read the resolution to the problems for my Win2k problems thread? If not for Win98, deleting 1 of those partitions would have been much more difficult, and a solution to the problems would've taken even longer.

I found 9224 version which appears to be a later version than 9034, but the 9224 version doesn't shrink as stated in my reply #5. DVD Shrink is a good alternative when it works, but unfortunately it doesn't work on many newer DVDs The description of DVD Rebuilder says to "Rip your DVDs with DVDFab Decrypter or AnyDVD first!" What's the advantage of DVD Rebuilder if DVD Fab HD Decrypter will do the job even after DVD Fab Decrypter trial has expired?

The latest DVD Fab is version 9.0.3.6 so you couldnt have found version 9.2.2.4.
I think you mean version 8.2.2.4.
All versions of DVD Fab will shrink a DVD to fit on a DVD5, you are obviously doing something wrong.
From the main screen, select the DVD Copy option.
With a DVD in the tray, Select Full disc, and you will see a drop down box at the bottom that has 2 choices, DVD5 and DVD9 as circled in the image below.

When the trial version has expired, the part of the program that still operates (DVD Fab HD Decrypter) may not be able to decrypt the latest protections but will still work perfectly well for older DVDs.

You are right about my not finding 9.2.2.4 version now that I think about it, and the initial version I found I thought was latest version was actually 9.0.2.4 not 9.2.2.4. That 9.0.2.4 version did not have the "Quality" drop down where DVD5 can be selected, and I saw no selectable menu tab to choose DVD5 or to shrink the ripped output. However, I now I find 9.0.2.4 was a beta version according to http://forum.dvdfab.com/showthread.php?p=133356 which may be why no DVD5 selectable option was found since that's a beta version. Thanks for the helpful info.

You are mixing up what functions certain programs do and don't understand their intended purpose.
First of all, one doesn't use dvdshrink to rip (or copy) encrypted discs, it is only used to re-encode or "shrink"...same for dvd rebuilder.

The free portion of dvdfab remains free regardless of the stupid dialog box.

So this is what you need to do, first rip (copy) encrypted disc to hard drive using either anydvd or dvdfab.

Next use either dvd rebuilder or dvd shrink to make contents fit on single layer disc.

Then use ImgBurn to write back to blank disc. Set write speed to 4x or 8x.

If you follow this, it should work well.
