  1. I need a simple way to cut/join/trim JVC Everio HM30 720p AVC *.MTS files without re-encoding ie lossless

I don't care about frame accurate I-Frame is perfectly ok. its rocket launch video and I just need to get rid of all the "dead" content before and after the launch.

mpeg streamclip won't do them. it tries and after getting quicktime 7.6 and mpeg2 update it still can't read the files. Vdub won't touch em either.

I don't want to convert them and lose quality. just want to trim cut join them.

    thanks!

You could try video to video converter, under tools, open mts, select start and stop, add clip, ok, choose direct stream copy, convert.

Or videoredo h264 suite or solveigmm video splitter. But they aren't free.

  3. video to video does not seem to work. it lets me add it I select direct stream copy

I goto split and select my start and end points which appears to work fine. I click convert. it does it but the resultant file crashes MPC and while it plays in KM its the entire file no split was performed and its 2mb bigger than the original ?? odd.

Also found a program called TSPE that also appears to work as I wish but there does not seem to be a "go" button or command anywhere. I open the video set my cut points set my save file name and there is no "execution" button command or menu option anywhere to be found ??? ie I can't make it "go"

    Try AVIDEMUX version 2.6

  6. AHH never in a million years would have guessed that

    alas it fails

    Error:
Buffer underrun in edit operation, reading non-final blocks in final loop pass.
    PID: 17, iPii: 0, ProgIndex: 0
Error: Edit failed, only 384 bytes written.

now I know why I loved my Sanyo HD1 so much. relatively TAME mp4 files compared to this AVC crap.

    trying avidemux now

  7. YEAH avidemux works !!

I hate it when programs don't auto locate the save location to the location you got the file from (they all do that annoyingly) but finally something that will tinker with these stinking mts files !! pretty fast too.

    thank you very much !

so paying it forward. if you have a JVC Everio GZ-HM30 720p camcorder (see picture)

that records 720p MTS files you can use avidemux to losslessly edit those files

holy crap that png screenie was massive. converted to jpg to save server space.

slightly annoying you can not drop a second file onto avidemux it does not update the video preview window.

it also gets out of sync rather easily (audio/video) so on some videos you may need to play the file first and note the desired time indexes you wish to use.

so close avi demux between files. BUT so far all the file output files are perfect no anomalies.

I am glad it did work for you.

The video audio sync problem has been known for a while. I hope people behind AVIDEMUX will do something about it.

I use "Video to Video" for my HD 1920 x 1080 MTS-files that came out of my JVC Everio.

Just choose "Tools", "Join Video Files".
Add the files or complete directory containing several MTS-files
    Press "Ok"
Choose "direct stream copy" then "ok"
    Choose output folder then "Convert".
The joined MTS-file (lossless, no real conversion occured) is stored in the given folder.

  10. I use Smart Cutter

    http://www.fame-ring.com/smart_cutter.html

Frame accurate, keeps audio sync, no re-encoding, super fast.

Has a weird interface where there are no keyboard shortcuts to navigate the video.

Here's some notes I keep for myself in case I don't use the program for a while and forget how to edit out commercials.

    SmartCutter for mts files:

    No keyboard shortcuts(sucks)
Use three different sliders to navigate
Bottom slider-press "-" key to zoom
Middle - will be used most
Top - to get frame accuracy

Click New Start Point then New End Point
    Click add list
    Record List!

    Make sure "link" is on

Thanks for your reply lazd. I tried smart cutter but i didn't find out how to join mts-files without re-encoding. V2v-converter does the job for me in a very easy way. Furthermore: v2v-converter is freeware.

  12. Hi twoages,
Thanks for mentioning Video to Video. I did try using it on a large MTS recording I have for editing out commercials.

For a free piece of software, it's not bad.

I found it wasn't frame accurate, took much longer to render than SmartCutter, a little glitchy when the final video was played back where the cuts were made, and I also had trouble cutting out parts from the middle of a vid to the very very end. For some reason it wouldn't let me cut out the last part of a video.

I found it hard to navigate a video too. Scrubbing through the video would only allow maybe 30 second accuracy for the multiple hour long video I used. Arrows on my keyboard allow for frame jumping, even tried holding it down. A couple buttons with a mouse click skipped forward or backward only by a second.

I think I'll stick to Smart Cutter still. Although not free, it's been quite good to me. I really wish it had some keyboard shortcuts as the 3 scrubbers are a little lame, but still faster than Video to Video. Rendering is much much faster. If I couldn't afford $49, I would probably go for V2V. Thanks.

    Hello lazd,

Thanks for your reply. Your coments are really making sence and i will keep it in mind. I just have started editing mts-files, so my experience level is still quiet low. Especially your experience regarding the frame accuracy, cutting and final quality of the video file is important. I will take a closer look at smart cutter.

    Regards from the Netherlands,
