  1. Hi

I've been having a problem converting the file I get from MakeMKV. I bought a Blu-ray of a film but need to make a DVD from it for my kids to view in the car on a portable DVD player (I would happily have bought the dual format pack if it was available in the UK, but it is not). I converted my mkv ok, and it plays fine on my PC. However, when I convert it I get jerkiness on my mpeg - using Xilisoft Ultimate Video Converter. I think my problem might be field dominance? Are there any general rules for converting a hd mkv file to DVD PAL compliant? I don't know much about mkv files, so please forgive my ignorance about how they work compared with mpegs.

I am using a preset I often use to convert DVB sized tv broadcasts to DVD compliant:
    720x576
    16:9
    mpeg2video codec
    Bitrate 3000
    Framerate 25
    MPEG Audio 128kbps
    48kHz

    Any pointers gratefully received.

  2. If it was a 24p blu-ray, that could explain the jerkiness (your program probably inserted an extra duplicate frame after every 24th frame)

What does mediainfo (view=>text) say about the mkv?

  3. Hi

    Thanks for the contribution.

Yes, it is 23.976 fps. I had assumed that the software would interpolate more generally rather than sticking in a still at the end!

So does that mean there is no way of doing this then?

    Thanks again for your help.

There are a couple of good ways, but none that involve using anything Xilisoft makes. Try AVSToDVD. It does the conversion to PAL pretty well.

Have you confirmed that the DVD player doesn't play NTSC DVDs? Most PAL DVD players do play them. That would keep you from having to change the framerate.

  5. There are several generic methods of converting 23.976p to 25p ; each has pros/cons . You can use search if you want more detailed info, they are discussed in detail in other threads

What is typically done is a simple speedup, both audio & video are sped up to 25p (so the duration is shorter). This way everything is smooth because no duplicate, blended or motion interpolated frames are added .

  6. Hi all and thanks for the replies

I'm making progress! I was using Xilisoft v5 but also have v7 on my Mac. This newer version makes videos which play smoothly and have been interpolated to 25 fps without jerking. However Quicktime for Mac doesn't like them much, usually a sign of partial non-compliance to standards. Toast also doesn't like them, insisting on re-encoding even though set to 're-encode - never'.

However, VideoRedo on the pc has just quite happily burned a disc from the same mpeg with no re-encoding and it seems to play fine.

So who knows what the answer is, but it seems to be resolved, more or less.

    Thanks again for the suggestions.

    you have oem bluray
why the H*** did you covert to mkv, if trying to make a dvd
why not convert directly to mpeg or mp4

even a screen capture from playing on the PC processed to DVD
would IMO be better than going to mkv then DVD

convert ?? or i guess is a matter of opinion

he has a hi-def mkv, trying to create a dvd

he has the oem retail BD, so he has the option of using a more compliant user friendly intermediate stage, when converting to DVD, go back to the source

are you going to tell me blu-ray and mkv are 'related' formats, with the same encoding ?

if so, i've learned something new

It's not a matter of opinion, the mkv that was made is the exact video and audio that is on the blu-ray,it's just put into a mkv container.

It's best to convert the mkv to dvd using the original fps and see if it plays in the portable dvd player.

which his dvd creation software xillsoft
    is not handling correctly ?

either because of the mkv container or the hi-res BD encode or both

he can try another authoring software with his MKV, or change the source format
by using a dvd compliant conversion

from reading these forums, it seems MKV container continues to be a major source of 'ISSUES',
just because it can hold the BD encode with out re-encode, does not make it the Ideal choice
especially when you posses the original release disc

The op was encoding the 23.976 video to 25 fps which was causing jerky play, nothing wrong with using mkv as long as you don't use head stripping.
