  1. I have a large video file that i encode in Handbrake to mkv format.
I need to add a text watermark throughout the video.
Is it possible to do this in handbrake itself? Or any other encoders that encodes to mkv and uses same encoding algorithms as Handbrake? Because, the output from Handbrake is really good in terms of quality- file size ratio.

P.S: I tried using the output from Handbrake in VirtualDub and Avidemux, but there is much quality loss due to the re-encoding process. Since i have the source file, i'd like to add the watermark during the first encoding process itself.

    Thanks for any inputs.

  2. Vidcoder uses the Handbrake engine and can also hardcode subtitles.

Hehe, no kidding. I thought I was being very restrained for not scolding him for wanting to ruin a perfectly good video by plastering it with his lousy logo. Apparently, because all the home video companies and TV stations do it people get the idea it's okay to do it themselves.

Hi, thanks for the reply. Vidcoder does have the hardcode subs option, but with that i am not able to set the place for my watermark. I don't want it to appear in the center, but in a corner. Also, there is no option for changing the size too.

FYI, i hate videos with those stupid watermarks. It really spoils the video. But there were times, when i really liked a video and wanted to see more from its makers or such similar videos, but i couldn't because nothing would have been mentioned about the maker of the video and in time it would have been plagiarized and available in a lot of places.
Hence i am trying to put a small url in a corner of the video, so that people would know the video's origin and they now know where to search for similar videos. And even after watermarking, it can be plagiarized, but atleast people would know where to find it from seeing the video.
BTW, its not even a entertainment video, rather about activism. So i don't think adding a small watermark to this kind of video would be of problem to any viewers, as they would be the type, who cares only for the content and not the wrapper surrounding it.

  6. You're right. Apparently all it accepts is SRT subs for which you can't choose the size, position, font, color, or anything else. I don't know why you're married to Handbrake. Use something else that accepts SSA subs. Within SSA subs you can choose anything you like and the encoder should respect the styles. One such program is XviD4PSP. Other people may have some other ideas.

  7. Thank you for the mention of SSA. I always wondered what exclusive features could the subtitle formats other than SRT might be having, given their huge file size when compared with SRT.

SSA is also a text-based subtitle format whose size isn't much larger than an SRT.

If you're talking about huge subtitle file sizes, you may be referring to image-based types such as VobSubs (IDX/SUB) or SUP subtitle files.

For example, I have subtitles for a movie in several formats. The SRT is 66 KB, the SSA 95 KB, but the VobSubs are 4004 KB (nearly 4 MB).

Sorry i left it out. It is not only about the file size, but the layout of the contents of the subtitles.
You know, SRTs has the simplest layout when compared with whatever subtitle formats.
And yes, i see that SSA has somewhat same size as SRT, but still it has a complex layout, though it is not for nothing. Atleast, it has the feature rich options for the extra few kilobytes.

handbrake can hardcode ssa format ... what I usually do is convert srt to ssa using divxland mediasubtitler , after editing and changing font ..etc i save as ssa, then drag n drop that along with the video to mkvmerge, then i take the resulted file to handbrake, in subtitles tab i select the subtitle i converted and check the box that says burned in, thats all they will be hardcoded into the video.

  11. Yeah, that's what i did at last.
Create a simple .ASS subtitle using Aegisub, muxing it with the video in mkvmergeGUI and using the output in Handbrake and then burn it. But thanks for the reply.

You can make watermark with your srt file.
If you want to appear text watermark on top/left corner and size 25, put like this {\an7\fs25}your custom text and change time from 00:00:00,000 to the length of movie in order to appear all the time of your movie.
Then , your custom text will appear top/left of your movie.

  13. If you feel ok to work with AviSynth, you might be able to do it if you write your script. You would definitely avoid re-converting. All-In-One encoders such as MeGUI, Handbrake accept AviSynth scripts.

Here are two threads I found:
