  1. So, I've tried several recovery programs. Some will run, some won't, most have to do with not being able to read the MTF. Testdisk couldn't do any kind of repair, Recuve couldn't even read the disk, tried several other programs.

What happened: When I was installing a new graphics card and CPU, my drive went from being OK to being bad. This is not the drive that has my O/S on it. I have just data, mostly photography and video. Most of my photography is backedup, not my video though. I would love to get my data back.

I'm currently running the WD extended diagnostic test. It passed the quick test. The drive shows up in my BIOS, it shows up in Windows as RAW and when I plugged it in (I had it unplugged while I was setting things up on a fresh install on my SSD drive, which worked flawlessly BTW).

Any other ideas before I format this drive. Should I 'write zeros' format the drive, run diskcheck, and if it's all good forget about the RMA? Living in Japan means I have to send it to them before they send me a new one.

If I skipped over any necessary information, let me know and I will post again.

  2. Remove and re-seat ALL cables to the drive. Use a different SATA cable. Do all diags and repair with all other drives removed from system, excepts as needed for attempted recovery. Once recovery is abandoned, remove all other hard drives and SSD.

If it passes tests, formats, and is usable, you still have the issue of what caused the problem. If none of the tests find an error, RMA will be difficult to impossible.

Was drive connected while CPU and Video card were installed and initially tested? Generally not necessary, but SOMETHING certainly went wrong. During that process, it is likely that a cable could have been bumped into partial contact, this would be the best explanation I could come up with based on the available info.

  3. I forgot, if you need your data off the drive, try GetDataBack. Check cables, as well. If that prog don't work, it's either send it to a "Clean Room" facility or format it.

I second that, if there is any (readable) data on the drive, GetDataBack should be able to recover it.
