Importing srt as a soft sub doesn't help you if you edit the video, because the timing will be off (you would need to edit the srt along with it)
Other options:
1) The premiere avs import plugin. So you import an avs script directly. The problem is the one for CS5/6 is 64bit and requires 64bit avisynth and is very buggy
2) The other workaround is to hardsub a blank video or RGBA with alpha channel use it as an overlay. You can key out the background color if the background doesn't have an alpha channel. Or if its pure black/white text you can it as a luma matte. The benefit of doing this way - faster to encode a blank (only subs) video, no quality loss for the main video, no need to encode a big lossless intermediate for the main video.
3) If you have AE, you can use the pt_ssa import script, or karaoke animator script which will allow you to import ssa/ass subs into AE, dynamic link into premiere . But it's mean for layer animation, probably not what you want -
thanks for answer, I will test this ways. but one note:
Importing srt as a soft sub doesn't help you if you edit the video, because the timing will be off -
Poisondeathray has layed it out pretty well. There is no "easy" way in Premiere.
What's your final goal? -
If you're not doing this for video, (just using the subs as reference to do audio work ONLY), just hardcode a blank clip with tiny dimensions e.g. 1920x160 or how ever high you need it, it will encode very fast using a fast codec, fast encoding settings. Quality doesn't matter. Use it as an overlay . You don't even need a full width video, just large enough for the subs to be visible.
