I have a Samsung LN32D403E2DXZA TV. It has two HDMI inputs, composite inputs, and one labeled output "audio out" red and white rca connection.

The internal speakers are not very good and kind of rattle when the volume is increased even at the 75% mark or so. I want to be able to connect external speakers but so far am unable to do so, even after phoning Samsung and spending an exasperating 30 minutes on the phone with a so called Tech.

    I bought a phillips sound bar http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Philips---Soundbar-System-with-Passive-Subwoofer/5938026.p...&skuId=5938026

which has an rca red and white input, but it did not work...no sound

I tried a set of Dell computer speakers powered, to the audio out on the back of the TV but no sound, although they work fine attached to a dvd player.

The guy at Samsung kept trying to give me solutions which involved connecting an external device which basically involved video and audio in. I kept asking him what the audio out connections are actually for and how can I use them...but never did get an answer.

You may be able to tell, I am not particularly knowledgeable about these matters, but can usually connect things properly and get success. This however has me stumped and I have wasted an inordinate amount of time trying to find the right solution.

I have a WDTV live player that I attach with HDMI, but of course I only get sound throught the TV speakers.

This TV does not enable one to turn off the volume on the tv and select external speakers. You can only turn it down or mute it.

I cannot return it, so that is not an option, or I would. The picture is fine though.

Could someone please tell me what I can use that is not too expensive, so that I can watch TV with external audio, and be able to turn down or mute the TV speakers.

    Thank you in advance

It looks to me that, although you have posted a picture showing the sockets as labelled Audio and Component out, these are to be connected to the audio and component out on an external device so would be connected to inputs and not outputs. According to the manual, the TV is correctly marked, Component/audio In.

As your TV doesn't even have a headphone socket, unless you want to open it up and connect to the speakers, then you can't do what you want to do.

From the specifications of your new speakers, it looks like they only accept digital audio.

From what I can discover, the red and white jacks on the back of your TV are audio in (Analog) and would be used with the component video in. (Also analog) There doesn't appear to be a analog or any audio output from the TV.

Your photo is from the BD player graphic, not the TV. This one seems to be the complete one from your manual:

If all of this is true, then you would need a surround sound receiver with a HDMI pass through that could output the digital audio from your BD player.

Or you could use the analog out from your BD player to a analog speaker setup, such as computer speakers to get sound. But I don't see how you can get sound from your TV set.

EDIT: Thanks, Richard_G. You noticed the same thing I did. But a bit quicker.

And erocs, welcome to our forums.

Thanks very much Richard_G and also redwudz, and also thanks for the welcome to the forum. It was not hard to tell that someone could get an informed reply without being flamed here.

I thank you both for your input and accept your feedback. Seems to me as a regular consumer it would be better to label the red and white on the back of the TV Input In instead of Input Out...but doesn't much matter now.

I have decided based on what you guys say, that I will be investing in a new TV, as this one is not good enough sound wise for me.

If you have any suggestions to make sure that I do not get stuck in this situation again, I would very much appreciate your input and/or specific recommendations for make and model.

I am looking for a 32", or 39" max...doesn't have to be 1080, as I am a winter texan and only get to use it for three months before going home. I really care about being able to attach a sound bar, surround sound system etc. to get sound out from TV broadcasts in case the internal speakers are not so great. My biggest problem occurs when the air conditioning kicks in our mobile home, and I miss dialog.
I guess optical out is a must? Headphone jack a bonus? but could still use a headphone with an adapter if no jack?

I have a good set of Sennheiser headphones at home, but of course wouldn't be able to use them with the current Samsung anyway.

It really irks me that the companies are forcing us into situations with little options but to spend more money.

    thanks guys

An LG 32LN5300 is one possibility. It has a headphone jack and optical audio out. http://www.lg.com/us/tvs/lg-32LN5300-led-tv

If you want audio out of any kind today, you do indeed need to be prepared to pay a bit more to have it.

Thanks usually-quiet...glad you're not quiet today...that is certainly an option and is $349.99 at Best Buy...and in stock...very interesting.
Will post if I decide to spring for that one.

    Anyone else?

The picture you have posted, are the Audio and Component "Outs" of the BluRay player, not the TV

    KBee,

Thank you, I realize that...my intention was to show a red and white labeled "audio out", the BluRay player was just in the picture and not the primary focus
    of my inquiry.

I'd second the LG recommendation. Not sure what models are available in the US but I bought one just before Christmas (a 42LS575T) on the basis of picture quality and number of inputs/outputs. 4xHDMI, Component, Composite, SCART in/out, 3xUSB, SVGA and PC audio In inputs with headphone and Optical audio outputs. It's got Ethernet and built in Wi-Fi too.
