I have a lot of old video files such as avi, m4v, mov, mpg and wmv, some of them with incorrect aspect ratios and desynced audio. By remuxing with mp4box gui I've been able to fix these problems as well as standardize my container formats to mp4. The problem however is that mp4box gui can only extract video/audio from other mp4s, and I need to be able to extract/demux the aforementioned containers as well.

Anyone that can recommend a good application for this purpose?

I already have MEGui and Handbrake, perhaps they can do it?

  2. Note that many audio formats will not be compatible in MP4 container, you will need to re-encode the audio

ffmpeg can extract from almost all types of AV files

    Is lossless audio re-encoding feasible?

Perhaps I should look into using mkv again. The reason why I started using mp4 is the windows-integrated metadata like Genre, Publisher etc which lets you use the windows folder-search to sort and filter based on file metadata. Thumbnails are nice too.

  4. Lossless audio encoding is possible, e.g. flac, dtshd, truehd, uncompressed PCM wave etc... but the filesize will be many times larger than the original . Also MP4 doesn't support any of them (except PCM, but open source muxers have problems muxing it) . MKV supports all of them and many other types

I've used ffmpeg-avanti GUI now and it works great for demuxing everything, however when I do need to preserve an original wmv or wma stream, it doesn't seem to be able to mux into asf. Perhaps it's just avanti that doesn't give the option (why wouldn't it?)

Is there any program like mp4box gui that allows adjusting delay and aspect ratio but for asf/wmv?

ffmpeg.exe can, so post in the avanti support thread or PM Chris K (the author)

    asfbin for AV delay
    wmarchanger for AR

Another GUI you might look at is hybrid. I think it can demux multiple types and based on ffmpeg/mencoder. The author "selur" posts here and helps frequently

Actually, there are TWO types of lossless audio that can be stored in the MP4 container: Apple Lossless and MPEG-4 ALS. The problem is, there are zero MP4 muxers (AFAIK at least) that can combine lossless audio with a video stream into a single file.

So ALAC cannot be muxed into MP4 with video, only MOV ?? I've never used it before (heh who knew El Heggunte was an "Apple lova" )

uncompressed PCM wave can definitely be muxed into MP4. Many pro cameras record this (e.g. xdcam) . pro muxers can store it as well, and it's in the MP4 spec

With a name like "mkvbob" I would have thought this a simple exercise....
(official mkvtoolnix won't allow asf streams but, gdsmux from haali media splitter will)

My bad, I was too uninformed =^.^=
Recent versions of L-Smash can already combine ALAC/ALS and H.264/VC-1 in a single MP4 file
