Hi... three points I'd appreciate some advice on:
1) I have (had - see below) an srt file that refuses(d) to work in AVStoDVD. It produces the window below...
Trying to fix this I came across a thread where Mr.C posts as an answer:
See Help/FAQ/Subtitles/Q5.1 how to debug a srt.
Bye
.. but I can't find a link on the site to this at all. How do I get into the FAQ pages and locate 'Q5.1'. Unless I am blind AND stupid I don't think finding this from the home page is at all obvious. I've given up...
By Googling I found that the problem was that there was no line break at the end of the file: now I have added this all works fine. But for the future, what other parameters (such as the character < ) will cause the srt to fail ?
2) Where do I find an explanation of the command line options window? How am I supposed to use these?
3) Does AVStoDVD now support ASCII Extended characters like umlauts? Last time I used an umlaut, the resulting DVD replaced the vowel with a '?'. Can I set AVStoDVD so that it will use umlauts and other such accents?
Many thanks for any help,
Martin

.. no, I STILL have the problem! Yet another run with AVStoDVD and after some hours, the whole process aborts again at the subtitle stage (I wish, given how long the video authoring takes, there were some way of aborting the subtitle stage without killing off the entire DVD authoring process).
What characteristics of an srt file would cause AVDtoDVD to abort? I have been Googling this but can't find anything. Still can't locate this debug an srt tutorial here ...
Maybe if I upload the log and the subtitle files (opera libretto - I have English and German subtitles for each of the three acts) someone might help??
Thanks!

@martinlest
the file Act_2_ENG.srt is full of errors:
- # 111: lines are divided by a CR+LF char. Delete it.
- # 247: after time end 00:36:36,903 there is a comma. Delete it.
- # 463: time end 01:22:00, is missing milliseconds. Add 000
Save the srt and run again the AVStoDVD project.
To access Help/FAQ/Subtitles/Q5.1, just press F1 (Help) when you open AVStoDVD, then click on FAQ and Subtitles. Quite easy, isn't it? I suggest you to read all the Help document because it contains useful info how AVStoDVD works. Not everything can be googled...

Mr.C .. You are wonderful, what would we do without you? And I only posted the question 20 minutes ago!
Actually, I was partly on my way to finding the solution, as after posting my message I continued Googling. For various reasons (Win7 x64??) none of the srt checkers I located worked, but I did find http://www.subfixer.com/, which debugged the files in seconds. I then copied the originals and the debugged texts into separate .docx files and used MS Word's compare feature, which brought up the errors you have mentioned. Definitely a site I will bookmark.
I made the srt files myself - I had the German ones and then (labour of love!) found an English translation of the text and copied and pasted this onto the German over the space of a couple of days. Not surprising a few errors crept in.
Thanks again for giving your free time to help (and telling me how to access the help files - I was looking everywhere for a link on the webpages: I'll copy the help file to my hard drive)..

Just one other small point: when I burn the VOBs to disc and play it on the TV, the subtitles selections are all labelled 'ENG'. In other words, if I have English, French & German subtitles, on the TV thy are all labelled ENG instead of ENG, FRE & GER as I scroll through them. Is that a function of the DVD player - the srt files are titled appropriately - or have I not set something in AVStoDVD?

Sorry - please disregard this image, posted by mistake..

I had to replace ä with ae, ö with oe and ü with ue ... not ideal.

I have no problems with umlauts using a UTF-8 encoded SRT file - neither softcoded nor hardcoded.
