ok heres my current situation, i have some VHS tapes that i want to make into VCD's. I've got a flyvideo capturecard and a celeron 1000 pc, plenty of ram and HDD space. anywayz i followed the sites steps on how to make vcds from a vhs, and followed all the steps exept one which was to use vdub to capture as avi first as vdub doesn't seem to want to work for me some message about "capture card already in use....." anyway thats not the problem as i used the software that came with my capture card to capture as avi -> has'nt got much options though, just record. anyway after that i encoded the avi to mpeg using TMPGenc and then used VCDeasy to make the vcd. however when i played the newly made cd on my comp and on a dvd player. the video seemed to be much slower than the original on VHS. can anyone please help me here in telling me if there is some settings i can change in TMPGenc to make the movies faster, (the quality of the sound a picture is perfect) or how i might be able to get vdub to work. or any ideas whatsoever to improve the speed of the movies.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Hmmm..this may be of no help to you but here goes....
When you captured from VHS were any frames dropped? Are the source and destination standards (NTSC/PAL) the same? Changing standards *may* result in frame differences and result in picture changes, dirty scrolling etc.
When I 1st started capturing I used the following setup:
ATI All-In-Wonder Pro
PII-400
ATI VCR Recorder
DVDMpeg
I setup the VCR s/w for my video standard and began my capture. The ATI VCR S/W captures to an AVI file which is very large, I then used DVDMpeg to convert the AVI file to an MPEG file using the VideoCD template provided.
Hope this helps at least in a small way -
I dont know if i'm losing any frames when capturing as i can't play the avi's properly. but i can play the mpegs which are also kind of slow. but that could be whats wrong. i think its the bodgy software that came with my capture card. i tried using AVI_IO but the same error message comes up at the start. 'video capture card already in use' maybe someone has a solution to get rid of this annoying problem.
oh and i'm preaty sure that my card is not in use by another program when i start vdub or avi_io. as i don't start any other program before i start those and theres nothing in my start up menu.
and also im encoding the source and destination the same (pal 352x288 - i think, but it is the pal standard. -
Go to 'Run' in the start menu in windows, and type in: msconfig
Check the 'Startup' tab and see if anything related to your capture card or software is checked. If so, then uncheck it, restart, and try VirtualDub again. -
umm... did you try control-alt-delete to stop any programs that maybe running in the background so that you can use virtualdub?

I agree - check the programs that are running, remeber programs startup in the background and you won't know they are there. You could also try downloading and using other capture software, there are some links on this site, try the "How To Capture" section.

hey peeps just got back from holidays.
ok i've tried all that there are absoulutley no programs asociated with the capture card running.
but i've also noticed one other thing when ever i uninstall all the drivers an re-install them vdub will work once but when i exit it, the next time i try it again vdub gives me the same message again.
sounds weird eh?
