For the longest time, I've used VirtualdubMPEG2 to add subtitles to AVI files using Avery's subtitler. Since most subtitles I've encountered are SRT files, I've used SRT2SSA to convert the SRT file to SSA. But recently, I've run into a couple of unusual problems.

First, on my new 64bit Windows 7 system, SRT2SSA now has a "weird" display. When started, it looks like this:

And when I maximize the program to fit the screen, it looks like this:

Notice that a lot of important command areas on the right side of the screen and at screen-bottom are no longer accessible. And yes, I "scrolled down" - and no command buttons are there. I realize this is a VERY old program no longer developed. But is there something I'm doing wrong that causes it to display that way? And is there a "fix" to this? Old though it may be, I really enjoyed using it.

Anyhow, I decided to use Subtitle Workshop to convert the SRT files to SSA. It did so just fine. But (sigh), apparently the Avery's subtitler doesn't recognize the SSA files created by Subtitle Workshop (sigh) - since the hardcoded subs don't appear.

I finally solved the problem using AVI ReComp. But I'm curious if the problems I'm encountering with Subtitle Workshop and/or Avery's subtitler and SRT2SSA are fixable.

Have you tried run srt2ssa in winxp compatitibiliy mode?

Or try subtitle edit to convert to ssa.

And I'm moving you to our subtitle section.

  3. Try changing your resolution to one of the older standards, 800x600 or 1024x768. Many older progs did not scale properly to higher resolutions, rather than actually re-size they just made one or two stock sizes.

Thanks for both replies. The first thing I did was try changing resolutions to everything between my current 1600x900 resolution down to 800x600. No go. Also tried compatability mode on everything from Win95 up to XP SP3. No go. Oh, well. I suppose it's just time to move on. AVI ReComp does the job.
