    I've never had a problem with hardcoding subtitles (for use with systems that can't use .mkv files). Unfortunately, I'm having a problem with these particular subtitles, where certain characters grow huge shadows and the whole font base is basically screwed up. I'm thinking this has something to do with the subtitles themselves, because I've been using Handbrake for hardcoding for over a year, and this has never happened before.

    Here are two pictures that I shot; the first is the original .mkv file with the subtitles on. The second one is the hardcoded one. My question is, why is this happening, and is there a fix?

    Hardcoded mp4: http://s1237.photobucket.com/user/pvtpatrick96/media/Untitled_zpsd26a8802.png.html?sort=3&o=1

    I've also seen some threads talking about .ssa subtitle files producing this mess (which is what these are), but I've never had this problem with .ssa files in the past.

    I would post/report in the handbrake forum. https://forum.handbrake.fr/

    You could also try an older version of handbrake, https://www.videohelp.com/tools/HandBrake/old-versions#download

    @gezenko

    I would try the very latest nightly build instead (0.9.8 is over 8 months old):

    I can only tell you that last year I did a subtitle hardcode job as a one shot thing and I gave up trying to get Handbrake to work. In the end it just proved to be easier to use Xvid4PSP for the job.

    Thanks, this is what worked in the end, at least so far. The text appears normally now when I hardcode the subs, and this was something I didn't know about...

    So yes, thanks for the post, it really helped out!
