  1. I don't have the Firewire cord for this Canon HV-20 to connect it to my MacBook. I'm just wondering what this plug is called so I can order it. I have a photo here. I need to know what the component out is called so I can order the plug..........Anyone? PHOTO INCLUDED

    THANKS FOR YOUR TIME!

  2. That's not the firewire connector, you will notice it says component out which is a canon proprietary cable. There is a standard 4 pin firewire connector elsewhere on your camera. You will need a 4 pin to 4 pin or 4 pin to 6 pin depending on what the connector on your mac is -- unless it's firewire 800 in which case you'll need a 400-800 adapter as well.

    Any decent electronics or video store will have it. Don't overpay.

    A good place to buy a cable is Monoprice.com. Take a look at this link and check out whether this cable will work for you:

    The newer Macbooks don't even have firewire connectors at all and require the user to get a thunderbolt to firewire converter cable.

    Apple's T-Bolt to FW adapter works fine.

    It should but I can't guarantee it. I have been using it to connect old FireWire HDs to new TBolt-equipped Macs. The only thing that hasn't worked perfectly is one 2.5" enclosure which, apparently, requires more power than TBolt is willing to give it through the FW adapter. In this case I had to either provide power (there's a 5V jack) or use the enclosure's USB2 port (which, of course, doesn't use TBolt at all).

    ...{time passes}

    Just checked at the Apple Store Online. There is one reviewer who says he could not get the adapter to work with his camcorder (didn't specify which one) and FCPX. Here's the Apple webpage which details which camcorders work with FCPX: http://help.apple.com/finalcutpro/cameras/en/index.html?

    I needed to capture some old VHS tapes into my Mac and found that "recDV" (http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/26065/recdv) worked with my Sony DVMC-DA1(analog>digital converter). No video preview while capturing (just audio) but the audio did tell me that it was coming across. It worked fine. This app along with the Tbolt>FW adapter (and the appropriate FW800-4pin cable) should do the job for you.
