I have used ffdshow over the years but have limited experience. Recently, after trying to install KLite codec pack, ffdshow was uninstalled. I did not complete the K-Lite install. I downloaded ffdshow from SourceForge and installed. I tried running VFW Config (as admin on Win7 Pro) but got this error message:

    RunDLL
Error in ffdshow.ax Missing entry: ConfigureVFW

I uninstalled and reinstalled, same problem. Possibly related, I also recently installed Windows7 Codec Pack.

    I need advice, please.

Codec packs are a mishmash of several programs that may or may not play nice with each other and your system, and are seldom if ever worth the trouble they bring. Ffdshow, on the other hand, is a single program that reads pretty much everything and generally behaves itself.

My suggestion would be to completely uninstall ffdshow and all the codec packs (checking manually to be sure the latter especially have left no debris), run a clean-up program like CCleaner on your system and registry to hopefully get any last little bits left behind, and then install ffdshow again. Hopefully thoroughly removing all the conflicting software will fix the problem.

K-Krap strikes again. Yet another seemingly healthy computer trashed by K-Krap.
    When will people ever learn?

  4. I don't use codec packs myself, but as far as codec packs go, K-Lite doesn't look particularly dangerous. The standard version really only installs ffdshow, LAV Filters and a stripped down version of MPC-HC. It probably attempted to uninstall ffdshow first as it was installing a newer version.

I think the "mega" version is the only one which installs the vfv codecs, but whichever version you started to install, my suggestion would be to let it install completely. Hopefully that'll fix whatever wasn't installed correctly or removed etc during the aborted installation. If it does, you could probably uninstall K-Kite and then install ffdshow by itself again.
