Many of the current camcorders on the market have a feature that allow it to record automatically by sensing the
changes in subject's movement (brightness) within the red frame displayed on the LCD monitor. Automatic recording that will wait for movement within a defined area in the LCD monitor, and when movement is detected, it will record for only the time that movement is detected. This is very effective for security monitoring.
I have video files that I would like to do the same thing with, just as a post-process. I would like to be able to open the video file, define an area on the screen, and have it run through the entire file seeking instances where the defined area changes.
Can anyone refer me to software that does something like this?

Most of the motion detection programs on the market will work with video files instead of live video. Here's a link to some do-it-yourself software that might give you some ideas how it works. http://www.codeproject.com/Articles/10248/Motion-Detection-Algorithms
Or commercial software like this one: http://www.zonetrigger.com/motion-detection/
There should be a lot of similar programs out there. Just do a internet search for ' motion detection software '
