I've been experimenting the past few days capturing with DScaler. I remember seeing a comment once where someone said to NEVER capture with DScaler and I gotta say:
Unlike VDub, DScaler instantly recognizes my Hauppauge USB-Live2 device, there have been ZERO dropped frames and the audio is in perfect sync.
I normally just capture to straight MPEG2 and that is just fine for my needs....but so far the results I'm getting are fantastic.

I then load the AVI into VDub, do some Border Control, some Chroma Smoother and frameserve over to MainConcept Reference to the consumer MPEG2 preset and the quality is fantastic.
What am I missing here?

your device is a hardware mpeg2 encoder isn't it? from what i've read it is. so you are going from mpg out of the device software encoding to huffyuv, then using mc to re-encode to mpg. nothing wrong with it if you were going to have to re-encode anyway even if you had the original output.

The Hauppauge USB Live 2 uses software encoding.
If I recall correctly, DScaler's capture feature was still considered "experimental" when development ended. Maybe that is why it isn't recommended, even though it works well for some capture devices. -
The device itself(Hauppauge USB-Live2) has no "inline mpeg2 encoder" built in to it. The MPEG2 encoding is done by the software. In my case it is usually done via Magix Movie Edit, or the supplied software WinTV7.

As far as previewing dscaler is the ultimate software for capture cards, for recording it depends i always prefered virtualvcr or vdub for caps. The best version i've tried is version 4.
I said it before but the dscaler team should really work to update it a little to make compatible with many more cards 'cause it's such a great tool*** DIGITIZING VHS / ANALOG VIDEOS SINCE 2001**** GEAR: JVC HR-S7700MS, TOSHIBA V733EF AND MORE -
I'm using 4.1.19 now.....been using it off and on all day and it's freakin' awesome with my Hauppauge USB-Live2.....it also shows my Hauppauge PVR-350 as an available capture device.

You will have to try the Hauppauge PVR-350 to see if it works. I have tried a few capture programs that show my Hauppauge HVR-2250 as an available capture device, but when I try to use it, there is an error message indicating that the filter graph chain can't be completed. Its probably because it can only do hardware encoding. I didn't have that problem with capture devices that provide the option to use software encoding, or only allow software encoding.

Problem: I've installed DScaler 4.2.2 alpha, but it says: Error 88760168 calling UpdateOverlay (Hide) - File .\OverlayOutput.cpp Line 304. The setting of mine is for DScaler and other softwares given priority DScaler.
Can someone know how to fix it..? Thanks in advance.Leo99 -
no response.. so, anyone here who already solved this problem, please..?

Thanks for the quick response, I use WinXP x86 but this does not affect even my vga card is not 3D..? Add notes: I use ATI Radeon HD 4300/4500 + Monitor ViewSonic VX2253 Series.

Hi,
The Hauppauge USB-Live2 works perfectly with VirtualDub, which recognizes it for me.
It also can produce the purist's YUY2 AVI output. Not sure if it just upsamples 4:2:0 MPEG to 4:2:2 AVI, or it's legit YUV 4:2:2 video that the Conexant series chip under the hood is capable of handling, but I would certainly bet using straight RGB is alot of upsampling fluff. At any rate, it works just fine, also with zero dropped/inserted frames and perfect sync.
However, I'm in NTSC-land, so not sure how it fares for PAL.Last edited by PuzZLeR; 30th Sep 2013 at 14:09.
