Guys (Baldrick?) is using VirtualDub still the best/easiest way to do this? There's a guide for it here from 2003 and I was wondering if there had been any development in the last ten years? I don't want to install the XViD codec so thanks.

The best way is not to join. The last video I joined was a vcd dat/mpg....

BUt if you must you could try avidemux, file->open and append, video and audio codec copy, select avi container, file->save as an new avi. No external video codecs are required.
