  1. I am trying to encode .Avi files to Mpeg (Ultimately to VCD using Nero 5.5) I have not been able to get the modt current version of TMPEnc to take my .Avi files, I get some sort of error message but Nero 5.5 will take & convert them albeit a crappy copy. I am told that I should get TMPEnc version 12a & that will do a better job but where do I find TMPEnc 12a? I did find TMPEnc 12b, will that work as good?

*Where can I get TMPEnc 12a?

Nope! Both TempgEnc 12a and 12b are not warez. Both were freeware. Try a search engine like Google and look for it.
    Good Luck!

  5. go have a look on tmpgenc's site. he specificaly says not to distribute old versions of tmpgenc, as he has the copyright, distribution of it is illegal, therefore making it a warez.

You are right, resnullius. But the fact that you stop the distribution of a software doesn't make it a warez. According to the U. S. Copyright laws, you can't change the status of what is freeware or public domain. Nevertheless, you can change the status for new versions or releases and that's what they have done in order to charge for mpeg2 (they have to pay for its use).
Can they say that they won't permit distribution of the old software? Sure they can. Is it legally rightfull? Maybe.
Anyway, you were right in calling his attention, even if he was just asking for info.

  7. Perhaps more to the point ... why do you want version 12a?

The newest versions (2.51 and above) encode MUCH MUCH faster.

With the older versions, I would do a MPEG-1 conversion (for VCD) of a 10 minute AVI/MJPEG clip, and the conversion would take almost 7 hours on this P3/800 box. The use of high quality settings, and the use of multiple filters, including the noise filter and edge enhancement slows things down. But the improvement is worth the wait.

But now, with version 2.53, it's all done in about 3.5 to 4 hours. The new versions really rock!

  8. In TMPGEnc, under the Environment Variables, make sure to bump up the DirectShow filters to a high priority (mine is at 5). This should make sure that your AVI files are properly read by TMPGENC. You have to do this each time you upgrade the software, since previous settings are not retained.

    Cheers

1 - Check out the TOOLS section <-----------Yes it`s on the left of your screen.
2 - Scroll down to encoders, there you`ll find TMPGENC.
