Greetings! My first post here, hope someone can help. I'm backing up some old VHS tapes, using a Canopus ADVC110 and VirtualDub to remove scanlines, etc. A few of my tapes have degraded color, and I'm not sure/experienced enough to know what it is and how to correct it. The tapes have like a wash of murky, almost red, then they'll recover for a few frames every five minutes or so, then back to the original color error. Is there a plugin for VirtualDub to correct this? I also have access to Adobe Premiere if that will help. Any advice would be welcome, and thanks!

  2. Can you confirm whether or not these are MacroVision protected VHS tapes?

I disagree. Do not deinterlace VHS for DVD. Even if you do, don't use VirtualDub to do it.

The images appear to be from a retail movie issue. Likely copy-protected and telecined. De-interlace is out. You need either an outboard full-frame tbc or a pass-thru tbc device that ignores copy protection. The only way to be more certain is for you to post a few seconds from one of your captures.

Do your other tapes have this same problem or other weird behavior? More info about the tape shown would be helpful.

I agree with Sanlyn - How in the hell do you come up with an interlace/de-interlace problem with the screenshots provided?

Looks like a standard MV AGC problem. Retail tapes/TV dubs? (likely) or Home movies?

I didn't say I was doing de-interlace on the video in question, and that's not where the problem lies.

I hadn't considered copy-protection. The fact that it popped in and out made me thing it was simply some problem with the tape, but copy protection makes more sense. Fair enough, and thanks to everyone who commented!

True, interlace isn't the major issue. You can get more detail by giving more info about your source tapes or posting a brief video. Sometimes you can ascertain facts from still images, but sometimes it's just guessing from a very small part of the capture.

It sounds to me like you did say it:

Yeah, the scanlines -- in that posted image, I assume? Hm, it would more than deinterlacing to get rid of that. Macrovision is my guess.
