pardon the newbie question, but what are the parameters I need to setup for SVCD captures on this card?I would appreciate inputs for high quality and alternatively, for long duration....
I need inputs on all params including visual masking, etc.
also, I understand I need the MMC rgistry tool to make sure the VBR/CBR, rate, and VCD bit(?) are really set...correct?

    thanks

  2. Its almost just as easy to make your own up. Stinkys Reg Editor is nice, but I prefer to make my own up. Depending on your DVD player you can caputure at the full resolution setting within the ATI Capture Software and it will play it flawlessly; however, the files are big. I usually use the full resolution setting and run it through TMPGenc to downsize the file.

Thanks, but I specifically want SVCD captures so as to burn SVCDs for my TV's DVD player...I should be able to do this with the ATI capture and then use Nero to burn the CDs...

  4. henryw, yes I have been doing this and it will work fine. First, create a new SVCD profile under Custom Settings in MMC. Then use Stinky's MMC registry tool to tweak the SVCD settings. I think the only thing you really have to change is the bitrate, but his latest version has a template built-in so it's very easy to set up. Then burn the captured file straight to an SVCD using Nero. I don't remember Nero complaining about a non-standard format, but if it does then tell Nero to ignore it and use the file anyway. This has worked fine for me, and I can watch the resulting disc on my Apex player or on the PC with PowerDVD.

The standard settings will let you put 30 minutes of high-quality video on a CD. If you want more minutes per disc then you will have to lower the bitrate or experiment with variable bitrates (VBR). Lowering the audio bitrate will also help.

  5. Sorry, I meant to add to the last paragraph that lowering the bitrate or switching to VBR will lower the quality of the video. Everyone here seems to have a different opinion, probably because of different tastes and different DVD/TV setups that they are watching the videos with. If you choose to try VBR you'll just have to experiment to see what works best for you.

  6. Oh yes, one more thing. MMC gives the file a .mp2 extension. You have to change the extension to .mpg for most of the programs to use the file, including I think Nero.

And if you don't have at least MMC 7.5 (7.6) is the latest version, then be sure to upgrade.
