Hi, i wanted to start copying my blu rays and burning them onto BD using FAB.
I thought about getting a X12 External BD Writer and using it in conjuction with FAB Programs .
Does anyone have advice for me and could anyone answer my two questions ?...
1: How long would it take to make a backup copy of a standard 90 min blu ray onto my computer using FAB ?
2: How long would it then take to burn the blu ray to a blu ray disc using an external x12 bluray writer ?

1) Time to rip - by my experience 20-40 minutes, with a single layer BD disc being towards the lower end of that scale and a full dual layer BD disc being towards the upper end of that scale.
2) It depends. The faster you burn, the less time it will take, but faster burns are more prone to errors, especially if you are using cheap low quality media. I generally burn single layer BD-R discs at 2x and it takes about 40 minutes to burn.
Do note that many BD discs will be dual layer and if you need to shrink them down to single layer size before burning, you will have to spend extra time doing that. BDRB (free) is really best for this task. It can take up to 3 hours to do that. DVDFab may do it quicker, but it won't do it with as much quality as BDRB. Well, I should say "It can take up to 3 hours to do that on my 6 core AMD PC". If you are using a PC with a less powerful processor than your times could be quite a bit longer.
If you are burning to an external burner it may be wise to not do a lot of stuff on the PC while it is burning and to maybe not burn as fast as possible with your burner and discs. We recommend that you only use the free program ImgBurn for your burning or you may have bad burns. -
Thanks for reply .
Just clicked on the BDRB link , it seems you need a to download several other programs to copy blu rays with this method ??
I'd like to just copy with 1 or 2 programs , is ANY DVD HD Any better ?
Would i need another program to rip a BD backup to my harddrive or would any DVD HD work ? -
The extra programs that you need for BD Rebuilder work in the background and you need not do anything with them after installation. BD Rebuilder will access them as it becomes necessary. You do need to install them correctly and use the Inspect tool that comes with BD Rebuilder to make sure everything is set properly.
AnyDVD HD is a decrypter and ripping program. It will not compress blu ray to fit smaller discs. So, if all you need is to rip to the hard drive, AnyDVD HD will do this. If you want to copy to blank blu ray media, you will often times need to compress the material. The majority of blu ray movies are larger than what will fit onto a 25gb blank, even when you only make a main movie backup.
I burn at 4x with my FTI Falcon Smart Blu discs, with excellent results. Verbatim blank blu ray has also been reliable in my experience, and I've always burned them at 4x as well. Using ImgBurn of course. -
You could use BDinfo to see which file is the main movie an how large it is, If it is under 22.5 GB you won't need to compress it for main movie only. But like the rest said, BD Rebuilder is the best an free but it is nice to donate.

here is the break down:
The quality and features u want on the BluRay should determine the method u use, but the following methods are most common:
Without compression: (considering u are trying to fit a DL BD-R 50BG to a SL BD-R 25GB)
Step1) AnyDVD HD
Step2) Clown_BD / tsmuxer
Step3) Imgburn
With compression: (best results for movie only would be a BD-R single layer blank disk)
Step1 ) AnyDVD HD
Step2) BD rebuilder
Step3) Imgburn -
OK guys . I will attempt to compress a BD50 to BD25 with BDRebuilder.
Here are the settings i have chosen in encoder settings, they were all defualt settings.
*Idle priority (defualt)
*Good (Very fast)
*One Pass (ABR ENCODING)
Hope this doesnt take too long. -
Just about to cancel my second attempt to compress a BD50 to BD25 with BD rebuilder.
Using the settings i mentioned above DB rebuilder has been running for 4 hours and is only 14% complete , at that rate it will take 14 hours to complete , that's not doable i'm afraid!
I am sticking to DVDFAB from now on, It rips and converts to a BD25 in about 7 hrs and quality is acceptable, it's a no brainer! -

I accept my computer is not great but i shouldn't need a big gameing PC or an i7 Processor to complete basic tasks with BD Rebuilder , no idea why everyone raves on about it no good for me sorry.
-
People praise BD Rebuilder because of the quality that it is capable of producing. Most of us prefer high quality output and use much slower settings in BD Rebuilder than what you were doing. But we also realize that working with HD video requires powerful processors or a great deal of patience...sometimes both.
If you are satisfied with the results from Fab, that's your choice. But it seems a waste of time and effort to turn good quality input from blu ray sources into the muddy results you'll get from Fab, unless your target output is for small portable devices where it doesn't matter much. -
if u don't mide just having the main movie at original quality uy might wanna try Clown_BD / tsmuxer as it is fast, ripped 30GB using anydvd to PC in about 30 mins, and stripped extras and kept main movie in about 7 mins at 23GB so it would fit on a SL BD, and burned at 4x onto SL BD.
specs: i am using a i7 2500K with 4GB ram and 1TB free HD space. -
To be honest it's not just about the time it takes to convert with BD Rebuilder, it's the fact that you need to download 3 other programs to work in conjunction with it plus a fourth as an Decryptor.
The beauty of FAB is that it does it all in one AND is very simple to use AND is much quicker, again-No brainer! -
Well, you said you already tested BDRB and it was taking too long. I ask you:
1) Why are the ancillary programs an issue if you had already installed them, as you must have, to get BDRB to work? Unless you're blowing smoke.
2) Why didn't you even bother trying high speed BD25 option?
3) Why bother asking for help if you decide to *not* at least try what's suggested to you? Then pronounce the verdict that the unanimous opinion of the members here is wrong.
4) Why did you waste our time?
No brainer, indeed.Pull! Bang! Darn! -
OK then.
Next time i want to copy a BD to BD25 i will use the BD rebuilder method .
I will try the higher speed option in order to speed things up.
What settings should i select this time in order to speed up the process ? -
And it's also a fact that DVDfab is clunky, slow to update on BD and DVD standards, and has to totally infiltrate every area of your OS. Give me anyDVD over it any time.
And the user interface on it completely blows chunks. It doesn't give much in options to customize what you are doing, and half the time the burns have out-of-sync video/audio
