A few months ago I tried to use AviSynth to hardcode some subtitles and I just gave up. NOTHING I tried worked. Even the options that people swore worked fine did not work at all for me. I gave up and used Xvid4PSP to do the job. That worked fine. I will no longer attempt to use AviSynth for this since I have a method I now prefer in using Xvid4PSP. I found a lot of posts on the internet from other people who had problems using AviSynth to hardcode subtitles and I came to the conclusion that for some of us, it will probably never work and nobody knows why.

Send me a sub and a video and I'll hardcode the sub into your video using AviSynth and then show you how I did it. This assumes there's nothing wrong with your subs or video. Heck, even XviD4PSP uses AviSynth scripts which you should be able to study to learn how it's done.

The OP's problem had nothing to do with getting the subs into the video anyway, judging from his script (but what's with that 'spoiler' crap?), but with the lack of an audio decoder.

I appreciate the offer, but I really don't care enough to spend the time to get you a sub and video. I have to do this so little that just letting Xvid4PSP do it works fine for me. There may be something screwy with my AviSynth setup but, again, I've got a workaround I can live with and my enthusiasm for getting to bottom of my problem is zero.

To be fair, I should point out that my need was rather unusual in that I was hardcoding simplified Chinese subtitles. Perhaps the real issue was the old "not the Latin character set" bugaboo stuff that Windows is infamous for. You might have problems too trying to hardcode simplified Chinese subs.

Hehe, you're right, since I've never in my life worked with subs using something other than the Latin alphabet (is that the correct term?).
