I have previously used Audials 8 for my particular screen capture needs. They capture area averages just under 1280x720 and 1-3 hours long. With Audials set to capture type "screen" at 3fps (75% quality)/128bit audio the resultant video for a 3 hour WMV capture was usually 250Mb-320Mb. Anything less would produce intermittently illegible numbers on screen.

What I'm looking for now is to replace Audials with a free or low cost option. Hoping to stay with a versatile and ubiquitous format such as AVI, WMV, SWF, etc. The attached image should provide a good idea as to the video nature, no "action" scenes there but the number values are in continual change. After exhaustive testing of different codecs and capture options I found the aforementioned setting to be the best balance between legible screen characters and file size.

Any suggestions fitting my requirements would be appreciated. (Win7/Regor 245)

You can use the free uscreencapture and capture in VLC see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7L-xML00WA4 to different formats.

But not as easy as non free solutions as mirillis action, audials, etc.

Thanks again Baldrick! You do deserve KUDOS as an active and helpful moderator, err, Super Moderator.

After test driving a fair number of the free apps available I believe I've come to the conclusion this is one software niche that doesn't yet have a full-featured user-friendly freeware/shareware alternative. Beginning to think I may go back to Audials (even with their quirks and not-so-great support).
