Hi folks. I'm new at ripping blu rays and I've been having a problem that my laptop will crash and give me a BSOD when using MakeMKV. Not all the time. I have used it to rip a few of my BDs successfully but lately it's been happening more often and the last time I'd even made a point to not have anything else open except the performance tab of the task manager, which I was watching churn happily along around 10% CPU and 20% physical memory usage when it crashed again right in front of my yes. Since I've never had this problem before I can only assume this is somehow being caused by MakeMKV or by my new external blu ray drive (LG BE14NU40) or its USBFast utility, so I'm beginning some tests to try to isolate the problem further while I'm still within the trial/return window for both MakeMKV and the drive.
My question is, has anyone else here experienced crashes like this while using MakeMKV or this particular LG drive? I'm at work now and I have my notes on the specific BSOD message I've been getting at home but basically it just talks about a memory dump and testing the memory (which I've done through BIOS and MemTest86 and it checks out fine) plus some code referening my Intel HD graphics (which I recently updated the firmware for but am still getting the same BSOD after that I was getting before). I'm running 64 bit Win 7 with an i7 processor if that helps to know.
Appreciate if anyone has any feedback or suggestions. In the meantime I've downloaded DVDFab for my rips and will see if the problem persists with that. Thanks.

could also be heat related. use something like cpuid hardware monitor to track temps. laptops are never happy under stress for long periods of time.

Thanks. I hadn't heard of cpuid before but I'll try it. I do think the first times it happened it may have been from overheating since at that point I didn't even have a laptop cooler and wasn't conscious of the heat at all (since I'd never done anything on it that puts it through nearly the strain of encoding video). However I'm pretty certain it couldn't have been heat related the last 2 times it crashed. Both times I had it running it in a detached studio that I use as my office with the door and all the windows open, at night, when the temperature in the room couldn't have been much above 50F (I live in Berkeley, CA) AND with the cooler fans on high. So if it did overheat in that setting then I really wouldn't know what else to do with it anyway.

cats are especially deadly to laptops. or any other pets? frequently vacuuming out the air inlet and outlet can help, but once the heatsink is dirty in a laptop it's going to get toasty.

Laptops get toasty even WITHOUT doing any kind of encoding....
But from what the OP stated he is using an external bluray drive, which an internal would add quite a bit of heat "ripping", but not an external.
And he is not "encoding" by using MakeMKV as MakeMKV does not encode, it just puts whatever you feed into it, into an MKV container with no reduction in size or quality as it is not really doing any encoding or anything much else.
I have used it to rip a few of my BDs successfully
If it is having issues and working to hard to rip from a retail protected Bluray that might be an issue to overheating or overworking, causing a crash/BSOD ?
Using laptops is so limiting and using externals through USB, etc. there could be quite a few things as there are so many variables.
All just speculation but, I have used MakeMKV for a looooong time and never had a problem with it when using it the way it is designed to be used. -
Hmm, maybe. I haven't had the problem using any of the programs I have for conversion or authoring (Handbrake, Video ReDo, AVCHDCoder) which should be pushing the laptop a lot harder than MakeMKV, so that would make sense. So that's fine, I'll just go with an actual ripper instead. Any recommendations? I did download DVDFab but I forgot I had tried very briefly when I was just getting started with all this stuff so now I can't get it in trial anymore and I really don't like the idea of putting down $90 on software that I haven't actually ripped anything with but can only use as crippleware.

Ripping can still be done after the trial of DVDFab expires. The free portion is called DVDFabHDDecrypter. IIRC, after expiry you just tick the option on the splash screen to continue using the free part.
Note that pretty much all you can do is rip, either main movie or full disc, and no conversions. It's what Fab calls Blu-Ray Copy. Their terminology for "Ripping" is actually conversion/re-encoding. They should know better.
The inability to do encodes is no loss really, as Fab's encoding is not the best. You can do better with free tools available here in the Tools section.Pull! Bang! Darn! -
Thanks. So if I'm using it just to copy the main movie how does it save the file? As an ISO?
Also I've tried from the intro screen of DVDFab to select DVDFabHDDecrypter to try that out but the screen it takes me too next is just the same one I get for Blu Ray ripper which won't actually let me rip anything. And I'd consider uninstalling and just reinstalling HDDecrypter alone from the direct link in the tools section but looking at the DVD Fab site it appears to be exactly the same file.
I don't know, I'm at work again so I'll have to try to figure it out when I get home. Their confusing jumble of product offerings is really annoying though. HDDecrypter is actually what I thought I wanted in the first place and somehow I can't get to it. Everything just takes me to links to buy their payware instead. Anyway, thanks and I'm sure I'll sort it out when I get home. -
Whats the exact error message in the BSOD ???? If you computer automatically reboot, you can find it in the Windows Event Viewer
-
I'm a veteran here and even I find the exact same thing confusing. Some months ago I installed a trial version in a Windows VM and I too had problems with this. This plus the fact that DVDFab has long been blasted for their confusing pricing model ("Oh you wanted to do THAT? Yeah, you didn't buy the right add ons, so that's going to cost you extra.") led me to just go with AnyDVD instead.
-
Yeah I'm thinking about AnyDVD HD now too. Obviously I'll try DVDFab's HD Decryptor and see if that suits my needs, since it's hard to beat free. However if I do wind up paying for something I don't mind spending a little more if it means sparing myself some aggravation later.
How is AnyDVD for converting? I like to save just the main movie title as H264 MKV since those play back nicely through my blu ray player and if my ripping software can save to that format in good quality instead of requiring using Handbrake or some other program for that then that might be another thing that would tip me towards it. Or is that what people use Clown_BD for with AnyDVD running in the background? I've seen references to that on other forums but I wasn't exactly sure where one program picks up from the other. -
FYI, below are the dump reports from WhoCrashed on the 2 latest BSODs I was able to recreate today. In between these 2 reports I updated the firmware again on my Intel Graphics but obviously that didn't fix anything. I was also running CPUID both times when it crashed and it's definitely not anything heat related either. So unless anyone has any other ideas I'm just going to look at it as the price I pay for only having a laptop with integrated graphics and I'm going to hope that either AnyDVD HD or DVDFab doesn't trigger this same kernel trap. If so, then problem solved.

Just to update, I was able to rip over the weekend using both AnyDVD and DVDFab and neither one of them crashed my laptop while ripping Avatar Extended Collector's Edition (the 1 BD that caused MakeMKV to crash my laptop every time I tried it). To get Fab to work I had to re-install it to make sure I was selecting HD Decryptor from the welcome screen and then not compressing or using any of the additional features from the BD or DVD Copy menus it takes you to when you insert a disk. I'm just assuming per the HD Decryptor instructions on their site that when I'm using Fab only to save either the entire disc or main movie to a blu ray folder that I am in fact using the free HD Decryptor even though every time I use it it tells me that I'm using Blu Ray or DVD Copy option and that my trial will end in X days. (Can anyone who uses the HD Decryptor only confirm that and tell me if I'll stop getting that message once the trial period is over?) I'm also not even sure whether the paid features of the software are actually available to me now in trial or whether they're still crippleware since at this point I don't intend on using anything but the HD Decryptor anyway. In fact, the fact that Fab has already hung on me a few times while trying to read a disc and then not allowed me to shut down properly after I've killed it through the task manager (ie. I have to use the power button because the Shutting Down screen just hangs forever) has me considering whether I should just buy AnyDVD HD instead since so far it hasn't given me any problems at all. I just wish for what it costs that it had more options (like saving only the main movie folder instead of the entire disk to shorten the time it takes to save a movie to my hard drive).
First though I'll have to give DVDFab's HD Decryptor a more extended look, since it's hard to beat free. But if it keeps hanging my laptop or nagging me to buy Fab's payware after this trial period is over then at this point I'm leaning to AnyDVD HD if I'm going to buy anything. -
MakeMKV does rip protected DVD and Bluray discs. At least that's what the MakeMKV site says. http://www.makemkv.com/faq/item/9/catid/8
Apparently MakeMKV's ability to rip DVDs will always be free, but you'll need to pay for Bluray ripping once MKV is no longer beta software..... which seems to be taking forever given it's been "beta" for as long as I can remember. Maybe MakeMKV was just having problems with the protection on a couple of newer discs.... it does happen. I've had problems with DVDShrink not being to open a couple of DVDs in the past because I've not kept AnyDVD updated.
I installed DVDFab a little while ago, just for a look, as I hadn't used it in years. What a horrible, bloated mess. I couldn't get rid of it quick enough. AnyDVD is better if you don't mind paying for it. It won't convert, but it'll sit in the background decrypting so you can open the disc with just about any software. AnyDVD will rip discs to.... it just won't convert.
Of course your problem could still be hardware/drive related, but hopefully you'll be able to find the cause if it keeps happening. -
-
Thanks. If MakeMKV just errored out on certain disks I would be fine with that and would probably still use it for most of my rips and then DVD Fab HD Decryptor as a backup (depending on how often I got those errors of course). But not if it's going to crash my laptop entirely.
And yeah, it's quite likely that it's something hardware related. My setup isn't exactly unique and I'm sure there are plenty of other people using MakeMKV on an i7, 64 bit Win 7 laptop with integrated graphics who are not experiencing these same crashes, or else I assume they would have fixed that by now. But if no one can point me to what I might need to do to fix it (beyond all the steps I've already taken) then no need to beat the problem to death either. Not when there's other software I can use for my rips instead.
So I'll consider if anyone has any other suggestions for making MakeMKV work for my rips (since I did get good results with it initially and would have preferred to just stick with it) but otherwise I'll just consider the problem solved by using other software. That's a perfectly good solution also even though it's not the one I was hoping for.
