I want to replace the audio from one video with the audio from another. I've tried a half a dozen programs, but every time I import the video (the one I want to keep the video of), the programs either tell me the file format is unsupported or freeze. I'm attaching a picture containing some basic info on this file. I'd actually like to keep a few minutes of the original audio track (and not have the new audio track for those few minutes), but that's probably just a crazy fantasy and could never be possible. The file had an mkv container, but I renamed it to mp4 (I'm assuming this has no affect and there's no difference between the two containers since it plays fine either way in VLC). If anyone can help, it would be greatly appreciated!

Use mkvtoolnix to add new audio tracks or mkvextractgui2 to extract the dts.
No, you shouldn't just rename it to mp4. It's another container format. -
That was one of the first I tried. When I selected one of the files, the contents (audio and video streams) appeared, but when I checkmarked the audio stream, a popup appeared stating that the program doesn't support that file type.

That's really weird.
Are you sure you have a recent version of MKVtoolnix?

I downloaded the newest version.
Edit: I'm going to try out the portable version and see if that makes any difference.Last edited by Slusho; 4th Feb 2013 at 09:38.

Okay, I was able to get it working with the file I wanted to use it with. One is an mkv and the other is an mp4, and it worked with the mkv. I had tested it with an mkv before and it gave the error I mentioned earlier, which is still a mystery, but doesn't really matter for what I'm doing. Now I need to find a program to demux the mp4 and remux everything together.

I'm trying Premiere and everything adds to it except the .dts file from MKVExtractGUI/MKVtoolnix. Does anyone know how I can utilize this audio track?

editing software can't use dts. convert it to a multichannel wav or 6 mono wavs.

What program would you recommend to do this? I assume there's no point to demuxing into six mono wavs if I want to keep everything, so I'd prefer to convert to a multichannel wav, as long as editing software will accept it. Also, is there quality loss in the conversion?

The quality loss is always in the compression, not the decompression (not counting accompanying SRC/FRC, bitdepth conversions, colorspace conversions, etc), so you aren't losing anything (at least, anything that isn't ALREADY lost). For audio converters: BeSweet/BeLight, DAudioK, eac3to are a good place to start. 1 Multichannel WAV vs. 6 mono WAVs depends on which NLE you are using, some prefer one, some the other, some both.

only if you don't edit it at all and then have to re-encode a second time.

When I hit "Go" in BeSweetGUI (outputing to wav), it runs azidts, which immediately gives a crazy error. DAudioK says "runtime error '9': subscript out of range" on startup. That leaves eac3to, but I don't know what GUI I should use.
Edit: I imported the file into Audacity, cut it up, and exported it as a multichannel wav. I should be able to do everything in Premiere now. I'd like to thank everyone that helped me with this. You've all been tremendously helpful, and I'm very impressed with how active these forums are.Last edited by Slusho; 5th Feb 2013 at 00:50.
