  1. My BD350 will usually play MKV from the USB and show subs. Now I have one that is 1.3GB and it will nt even play movielet alone show subs. Does size of the file matter, most are around 800MB
    Quote Quote
  2. If the usb drive is fat32 formatted, the size limitation is 4GB

In your case, there are other reasons for not playing (probably encoding settings, you can use mediainfo view=> text for more information)

Many thanks What is header stripping?
or disable header compression removal in the options
    in the options where

Yes in the options, file=>options=> disable header removal compression by default. I think in the newest versions v6 or newer it's off by default (there is no option available, because it's been removed), so you can just remux it without fiddling with the options

It's an option that creates barely smaller files by removing header information. The people who designed it are morons who think that nobody will ever play files on anything but a PC because such files play fine there. It's intended to be used by financially challenged people who buy one large disk drive to hold ALL their movies and they never intend to buy another drive, so saving anything in space used, even a 1% smaller file, might be meaningful to them. I'm not exaggerating about this.

We have another thread going on where one of our members pointed out that until recently a popular MKV muxing program turned this option on by default and made you have to work to turn it off. It caused so many problems that they no longer offer it as an option at all and it's turned off on recent releases. I remain amazed that the developers never considered that this might be a bad idea to make it on by default, but that's what happened.

I did think it was stupid to have one little thing removed make such a hassle

Thanks for your help with this

Yes you are! LOL. Savings from header removal compression are usually in the 0.1 percent range. Not a good tradeoff considering how many devices can't handle it.

It's supposedly part of the MKV spec (I never looked at it, so I wouldn't know), so Moritz (mkvtoolnix's author) was hell-bent upon enforcing it, no matter if it broke hardware player/etc. support. He was of the opinion that it'd force player manufacturers to update their players/firmware to support the 'proper' MKV spec.

...so, other than changing the option so that it wasn't on by default, after a while, he's recently changed his position on it?

  23. Does your DVD player support subs multiplexed into the file? Many don't. You'll probably have to extract them to an SRT file.

I find it hard to believe your DVD player supports HD AVC video. You must have a Blu-ray player.

If I remember its name correctly, the program MKVExtractGUI2 that comes with MKVToolnix can extract multiplexed subs from an MKV file.
