Does anyone know of any video player that plays in pan and scan? I have a commerical DVD that has a widescreen and pan and scan menu. I edited the subpics for the pan and scan menu and now I want to test it out. I tested the menu using Toshiba DVD player, WMP, and PowerDVD 12, but all they do is zoom in on the video. Unless I'm misunderstanding something when it comes to pan and scan menus.

Just because it says it's Wide/PS doesn't mean it's really Pan-And-Scan for 4:3 television sets. Most only crop. Is any panning-and-scanning actually going on? Is there left and right movement within the original widescreen picture?

Yes, you are correct. It was cropped (at least that's what's showing in DVDSubEdit). There was no panning-and-scanning. It was a still menu, so I don't think there would be any pan and scan anyways.

Then I don't understand. In your first paragraph you say it's a still menu, but in the second you say it's a real pan-and-scan. Are these two separate menus within the same DVD? And if it's pan-and-scan, there should be left and right movement within the original widescreen movement. If it's a motion menu that doesn't necessarily mean it's also pan-and-scan.
To tell you the truth, I don't know that I've ever noticed one, but only know they're pretty rare. I figured any DVD player could play them, software or hardware, but I could be wrong, I suppose. -
Sorry, I was using the wrong term and I changed the title to reflect that. You know when you make a Widescreen menu, you need a 4:3 or pan and scan menu with it (cropped). I'm talking about the second button group. Is there a software player that can play that? I did read a comment from a member from doom9 that said only a hardware players could only display it, but that was in 2009. Hopefully it doesn't hold true now.

Now I think I understand. Yeah, when testing with PowerDVD and Media Player Classic-Home Cinema just now I could only get the WS to play.
You can open the menu in DVDSubEdit (File->Open Full Domain) and choose the VTS_01_0.VOB or whatever VTS the menu's in. In the upper right beside 'All Streams' there's a drop-down box that allows you to choose between WS and LB (or PS in your case). Then in the bottom center you can get the player going and switch back and forth between WS and PS to see how it looks with its buttons. You can't actually click anything to see if they respond properly so maybe that's not much good to you.
If you have a DVD-RW around, I guess the best thing is to burn to disc to test. I remember having to do that once when testing to check if my LB menu worked the way it was supposed to. And then test on both 16:9 and 4:3 TV sets. Even wasting a DVDR isn't very expensive. -
Testing in DVDSubEdit isn't the same for testing, lol. It definitely looks different on a software player. I was afraid I was going to have to use hardware to do testing, but I don't think I have a choice =(. Oh wells, I'm gonna have go buy some DVD's.
It would be nice if there was a way to swap out the button groups or disable the widescreen one.
Edit: I think I figured it out. All I had to do was just crop it the same way the pan and scan menu was and set it as the wide menu. So I pretty much had to go through vobblanker and redo everything again. Again, this is only for testing to see if the pan and scan menu works with the subpic for a software player.Last edited by mrcoolekin; 28th Jan 2013 at 18:03.
