CVD: China Video Disc. It is china's SVCD. In a way, SVCD is the western answer to that format. The only difference is the resolution: CVD is 352 X 576 when SVCD is 480 X 576. All SVCD players has to be compatible with CVD. China is a huge market you know...
There are some benefits for creating CVD and not SVCD: First of all, you can fit more per CD. Then, is the resolution: 480 X 576 ain't DVD compatible, when 352 X 576 is. This called D2 Resolution (some US friends of the forum call it half D1), fully supported by DVD-Video. It is the second real legal resolution of DVD-video we know. It is ideal for SVHS to mpeg 2 convertion. With an average bitrate of 3000, you get the quality similar to DVD - D1, at the half file size. An average bitrate about 1900 also create fair results, most of the times enough for movies.
You 'll not see any difference between the quality of CVD and SVCD. Horizontal lines don't count the way Vertical ones do!
