    Hello,

I am attempting to convert an MPEG-2 video asset to WMV VC-1 for use on xbox360. I am trying to convert the MPEG-2 audio to the "Windows Media Professional 10" audio codec with 6 channels. The main encoder I am using Rhozet Carbon Coder however; before encoding even starts I get very generic encoding error which basically informs me that Rhozet could not find the source of the problem. Encoding does work if I target 2 channels. To get more information I tried converting using FFMPEG but the error I get from that is: to many channels: got 6, need 2 or fewer.. Here is the MediaInfo analysis of the file:

Obviously something is wrong with my source audio format but I have 6 channels so I do not see why encoding would fail? How would I go about converting this MPEG-2 source to WMV VC-1 using "Windows Media Professional 10" with 6 channels? Do I need to convert it to another format first or is my source using the wrong audio format?

    Would appreciate any help.

  2. ffmpeg cannot encode wmapro (so it's limited to stereo wma), that's why you're getting that error message

some programs might have problems with the .mpg extension for a transport stream (their splitter might not expect 5.1 AAC), so you might try renaming it to .ts, or .mts

you can try expression encoder , or avisynth + wmnicenc (this should work for sure, but requires avisynth knowledge)

Spending the rest of your life converting videos so a stupid Xbox or PS3 will play them is no way to live when you could just buy a Western Digital streaming media player ONCE and be good to go for years to come. Your choice. I bought mine something like 4 years ago and it still works and I still use it. It's one of the very best purchases I ever made and it has far exceeded its cost in terms of the enjoyment it's given me and not having to convert everything to Divx/Xvid just so a DVD player could play various videos.

We have very few people here who encode with VC-1 for the Xbox for exactly the reason I described above, but perhaps one of them will provide some guidance.

I am no expert, but MPEG-2 even at HD resolutions may be OK for the Xbox, but that audio is almost certainly going to have to be converted. I hate AAC audio and don't use it so others with experience will have to comment. Perhaps you need only convert the audio to make the Xbox play it, but still, the Western Digital players would play that file as is.
