Hi all. Truman and Baldrick, I dunno if I'm in the right place or not as I am fairly new at this business, but I've done a dozen movies since my first halting posts, so maybe that makes me almost a veteran?

In any case, I have an mpg movie file with stellar video and audio that would qualify as equally superb, were it not for an audible "hiss" I can't seem to get rid of. The file was already in mpeg format when I got it. The audio decoder is listed as "LIGOS Mpeg Audio Decorder;" video says simply "Mpeg Video Decorder."

Any ideas as to what caused this, or better yet how to fix it?

Is there a better place to ask audio-related questions?

    Thanks!

Try loading the audio into www.goldwave.com and use some filters

Thank you! I've tried Diamond Cut and accomplished basically zilch despite tinkering with the filter settings last night and most of today. At this point, I'm willing to try anything. Thanks again!

  4. I use Cool Edit Pro, personally.

Load up your file (preferably .wav) into it, and highlight a section of audio that contains *only* hiss in it. Get a noise profile from that, then run noise reduction over the whole thing at a reduction rate of 85 percent or so (to avoid nasty NR artifacts).

    Should make ya happy.

Also, check the resolution of your sound file---if it's 8 bit, you'll never get rid of the noise. Convert it to 16 and hope for the best.

I just got Cool Edit Pro. Now I just have to figure out how to use it, LOL! Thanks for some info on the settings. The mpeg file is already 16-bit, so I should be able to do something with it eventually.
