It used to work with Vista, since I upgraded to Win 7, all I get is static. There are no new drivers and I also tried it in Win 8 and still the same thing. What would have caused this? No bios upgrade available either.

Did you try install audio drivers for Windows 7?

Generally, W7 does very well coming up with generic drivers. Unless you have a very odd audio chip, the generic drivers should have worked. I would probably check with Acer and see if they are aware of any problems.
You could also go to 'Control Panel>Sound>Recording' and see if you have a green check mark by the microphone settings. Also try snapping your fingers and see if the volume meter shows any reaction.
W7 uses different audio handling than Vista, AFAIK, but installing W7 should have also installed the correct audio drivers to enable your microphone to work. -
UnMute MIC, select in advanced REC features +20dB gain, set correct level in Input mixer.
