No, using direct stream copy for the video in VirtualDubMod when remuxing the new AVI won't convert it.

Not exactly. If you type "lame --longhelp" in a CLI window, you'll get (at the end of the text):
Code:MPEG-1 layer III sample frequencies (kHz): 32 48 44.1 bitrates (kbps): 32 40 48 56 64 80 96 112 128 160 192 224 256 320 MPEG-2 layer III sample frequencies (kHz): 16 24 22.05 bitrates (kbps): 8 16 24 32 40 48 56 64 80 96 112 128 144 160 MPEG-2.5 layer III sample frequencies (kHz): 8 12 11.025 bitrates (kbps): 8 16 24 32 40 48 56 64

Did you know that *not all* MP3 decoders are capable of decoding MP1 and MP2,
even though they should be (according to the official recommendations at least) ?
In the same way, it's unfortunate no one can force the firmware designers to create MP3 decoders which can decode "all types of MP3 audio".Last edited by El Heggunte; 22nd Jan 2013 at 02:22.

Mpeg1,layer3 and mpeg2,layer3 are still "mp3", just that one has extended range in terms of samplerates and bitrates (both higher and lower, even though lame's helpscreen doesn't mention it).
"Mp1" is Mpeg1 (or2) layer 1, "mp2" is Mpeg1 (or2) layer 2. The "layer" is similar to video's use of "profiles" and refers to the encode/decode complexity.
Any decent MP3 player should be able to play both mpeg1,layer3 AND mpeg2,layer3. And any decent player that plays mp3 ought to be able to play mp1 and mp2 files as well. If a player doesn't, stop using it or gripe to the player's author/programmer.
