If you have no idea then use a converter with a preset for you nokia n8. You can then also copy those settings and try use in megui.

Try for example xmedia recode and see it has any nokia presets.

  3. When you set up the x264 encoder using MeGUI (select the config button next to the encoder), select Nokia N8 as the target Target Playback Device. Change the Tuning and x264 speed preset if you like but I'd leave any advanced x264 settings alone. I think you'll find devices are more likely to support h264 video than Xvid encoded video, so I'd use the x264 encoder.

You'll notice when you select the N8 preset it automatically selects High Profile, Level 3.1 in x264's settings (they're greyed out if you don't tick advanced settings but you can see them). The N900 option selects Baseline Profile, Level 3. You need to look at the specs for the device(s) you're wanting to use for playback. They'll usually specify a profile and level. Possibly a maximum resolution etc too. You need to pick the lowest common denominator between the playback devices you use and encode using the Profile and Level which keeps it happy, and then the rest of the devices should also play the video.

More on x264 levels here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H.264/MPEG-4_AVC#Levels
MeGUI may warn you if you try to encode using a higher resolution than the chosen levels supports, but I can't remember. The list on the page I linked to shows the maximum resolution for each level.

  5. As long as you select the correct profile and level, you can use whichever speed preset you like. The speed preset will effect the quality/file size a little. Slower presets may give you a smaller file size and/or higher quality for a given target quality value. Well as long as you know which Profile and Level to use.....

I had a bit of a Google and it seems the 5800 isn't that good a video player, and Nokia don't advertise specs regarding what it will and won't play, There's nothing on their site, nothing in the manual. I found this forum post where people are complaining about Nokia and the phone for that very reason. The consensus seems to be to use xvid instead of h264 and a resolution of 640x?
A few posters there mentioned programs with presets for the 5800 which you could try, but a quick read seems to indicate those programs use xvid. You might get it to play x264 if you encode at a low resolution but you'll have to experiment. Sorry I can't help with specific settings if Nokia don't.
