    Hello again,

You say "win7 install". What exactly does that mean? Do you mean that you installed Windows 8 over Windows 7 instead of doing a clean install of Windows 8? If so, that is exactly what I did and I didn't have the problems that you describe. I was running Premiere Pro CS6, not CS 5.5.

I ghosted my Windows 7 installation before upgrading to Windows 8 and I am glad I did because I ran into problems with other software and hardware. Granted, I should have done a FULL investigation of all software and hardware before I upgraded. I ended up going back to my Windows 7 installation.

Did you have any extra codecs installed in your Windows 7 installation that aren't installed in your Windows 8 installation that were used in the projects you are trying to open? Perhaps some codec packs?

So again I ask, were any codec packs installed on your computer when you were running Windows 7? Or did you have, say Huffyuv or Lagarith installed when you were running Windows 7?

Sorry for all of the questions, but I am systematically trying to get to the root of the error message you have received.

What video file types were you using in the projects that contain sequences that won't load? If you still have the video files used in the project(s), use MediaInfo and post the results here.

As for not having used any codecs other than the native ones, if you imported video (from an outside source) that did use non-native codecs, and you had the non-native codec installed on your Windows 7 machine, then you did actually use the non-native codec.

  12. heaps of different video types. every conceivable.
none of the projects are opening. nothing.

I am at a loss. Maybe someone else here can chime in. I don't want to tell you to install the codec packs because in my experience they can potentially wreak havoc!

Did you do a system backup of you Windows 7 before you wiped you hard drive? As I stated earlier, the only way I could totally solve my problems was to go back to Windows 7!!

  14. Did you try make New Premiere project and import old Premiere project file?

  15. if i try and import the projects.. it imports some of the sequences.. but then i save the project under a new name,.. close the app and when trying to open the newly saved project it gives the same error...

Ahem... I've been using K-Lite Mega for 20 years and the early days had some issues and gotchas, but that's all been worked out now, if the user keeps their fingers out.

The whole world of home video editing was created by "3rd Party" codecs, and script based editors laid the foundation for commercial NLE's that we love so much.

So spread the good news! And if you dinked with your codec pack settings and hosed yourself, that's nothing to be ashamed of.

P.S. And don't listen to any of the naysayers below.

    I was talking to Brainiac.

So you did the K-Lite install? So is it working? You probably have to restart Premiere.

Premiere is SPECIFICALLY TELLING YOU that a codec is needed. It's either a K-Lite codec, or another 3rd party like Cineform, or whatever codec may have been installed under Win7 previously, from a camera, like the Flip camera has it's own codec.

Try to remember where the clip in question was acquired. Does it need QuickTime?

Thank you budwzr for the informative reply, especially in the way you worded it. It was not condescending and I appreciate that.

Admittedly, I haven't used codec packs in a while and the last time I did, I did not tweak them or modify them at all. But I guess I must have done something wrong

Hey "Brain", you're part of the upper echelon. A compositor. We're a rare breed, hehehe. If we were "Wild Turkey" bourbon, we'd be the "101".
