I have been using Microsoft Encoder 4 Pro for editing my WMVs and I love it because it has the setting "Apply Source Encoding Settings" so I can keep the original source settings. My current version isn't the Full Version as it doesn't have the codecs for encoding mp4s. Does anyone know other editing software that has a similar setting as "Apply Source Encoding" for mp4s? What I am trying to do is to reencode some HD videos by lowering the bitrate to preserve disk space.

I don't think any converter will be able to set all settings like same video and audio codec and advanced codec properties. But most do set correct frame size, fps and you just have to set video codec, bitrate and copy the audio.
Load the mp4s in for example vidcoder, use the normal preset, click settings, change to mp4 under container, under video choose your target file size, under audio choose auto pass through under codec.
