I have been using BDRebuilder and ImgBurn to produce DVD copies of BDs without any problems for about 2 years. I purchased an LG BH14 BD burner and today tried burning BDs with it. I have tried twice and ImgBurn has hung both times. Before I make more coasters I am hoping someone can give me some insight.

My computer is a home built PC running WindowsXP SP3. I am using BD-Rs, single layer discs and ImgBurn (v 2.5.7.0) is set at 4x speed. BDRebuilder was used to create the files which total about 24 Gbytes. The first trial was using the Verbatim disc which came with the player and using ImgBurn in the "write files to disc" mode. It got to 20% and just hung, enough that I couldn't close it. The rest of Windows worked normally. The only way I could close ImgBurn was to restart the computer.

The next time I decided to use ImgBurn to create a disc image and then tried burning the disc image to the BD-R. This was an Optical Quantum disc I purchased with the BD burner. It got to 79% and then hung.

In both cases I was watching the stats. The buffer and device buffers both were at 100% when it stopped. What I noticed was that the burner would suddenly become louder (? speeding up) and the writing would stop. After about a minute the burner stopped spinning. The hard disc which had been solid red for continuous activity started blinking every second.

Any thoughts about why ImgBurn is hanging?

    Thanks.

If you have not done so, first of all you should load UDFReader. Click on my link and download it from VideoHelp via that link. I'm not saying this is your problem, but you definitely need to install this anyway as Win XP does NOT understand the UDF version necessary for BluRay without it and it just asks to be a possible source of problems to not have this installed.

4x should be OK, but it is troubling that your burns failed. Your media should be OK. Verbatim BD discs are good and I had an Optical Quantum sample disc too and it seems OK. Is there any chance you can get a BD-RE disc to use? I'm a bit concerned that your burner may simply be defective. I only recommend using Verbatim BD-RE (RE means re-writable) discs. Order them online if you have to. I've bought Sony BD-RE discs and they have not been reliable for me.

  3. It doesn't 'hang', it just waits for a response to I/O commands it submits.

So why isn't it getting a response? Bad controller? Bad cable? Bad drivers? Bad filter drivers? Bad drive?

Knowing the family tree info for the drive and the contents of the filter driver list would help.

You get the family tree info by right clicking on the drive selection box and clicking 'Family Tree'. Close the prompt and just copy + paste everything from the Log window. Filter driver stuff can be found via the option in the Tools menu. You can copy that to the clipboard and paste that too.

If you have any, just stick to using BD-RE until the issue gets resolved.

Thanks for the responses. I already had UDFReader installed, as I have a BD player, which is what I've used to copy BDs onto my computer and then turn them into BD-5's with BD Rebuilder.

I replaced a DVD burner that worked without problems and used the same cables, etc, so I doubt it's cables but I guess it's possible.

IF there's something here that's amiss, I will be happy to change it.

  5. You've attached the drive to the marvell controller for some reason. Get it off that and onto the proper Intel one.

Thanks. I was wondering about the controllers. I also wonder if it has to do with the fact that WindowsXP doesn't have sata drivers, so I've set the system BIOS for all the controllers to run in IDE mode. Would this be the problem?

  7. I assume you mean AHCI drivers?

Intel have the chipset (inf) software drivers and rapid storage tech drivers to handle that. You have to mess about in the registry first though I think or windows can't handle the change in controller modes during boot up. I'm sure you'll find something about that if you Google it.

IDE/ATA mode for the controllers is fine. I used my PC in that mode for many many years. I'm running it in ACHI mode now and it's fine in that too - for optical drives I mean.

I hoping the big issue here is that the Marvell controller is just rubbish (as is normally the case) for optical drives. Swap the drive's port so it's connected to the Intel controller and your problems should go away.

I did mean ACHI drivers. When installing WinXP, it gives you the option to add third party drivers, and I've tried installing the Intel ACHI drivers, but for some reason it has never worked. I will try switching the cable to one of the Iintel controllers and hope that is the issue.

Thank you very much for your help. I will get back to you tomorrow to let you know what happened.

I changed the BD burner so it is connected to an Intel controller, and I've burned 2 BDs successfully. Thanks for everyone's help.
