  1. I don't need the best of the best, but I want something that will play any HD movies (720p, 1080p) I want in any codec/container format on my TV.

Will this get the job done?

    Or spend more for this?

I don't have a big budget just want something to make my life easier and not worry about burning blu-ray discs anymore.

i use a Western Digital Live TV box with Jbod icybox Holding 2 2tb Hard drives to it on usb, i can send movies over the network to it & copy from it with any pc in the house over lan or wifi. as long as it conected to a router. runs on hdmi, i have not had a single format it will not read, realy happy with it.it has 2 usb ports so you can use usb flash drives too at the same time, if you have an external Hard Drive big enough then no need for the jbod.

    WD TV arond £65

The Western Digital line of products have been used by many of our more experienced members here for years now. But do note that we can't guarantee you ANY codec. I mean you could theoretically come up with some crap like Real Media or Dirac or whatever bs anime people are using these days that nobody else in the world uses that won't be supported. If you stick to reasonable ones like H.264, Divx/Xvid, MPEG-1/2 and VC-1 then you will be fine.

As others have pointed out, no device plays everything.

  5. Best way- just connect your computer to your TV. You can play anything.

  6. Thank you for all the feedback! I may try the cheap media player for my first one before I dive into the more expensive devices. And yes using my computer would be the easiest way but the TV I'm wanting to display this on is in the living room so its a matter of connectivity. Just wanted to get some expert opinions on whether or not I'd be wasting my money on the cheaper device. I've always bought WD hard drives but wasn't sure on how good their Media Players are as well.

  7. I found a better deal on amazon

    http://www.amazon.com/1080P-HDMI-Multi-Media-Player/dp/B006LEYQK4/ref=sr_1_11?ie=UTF8&...a+player+1080p

But I'm confused where it says H.264 (MKV, MOV, AVI 1280 * 768) under file support, does that mean it only supports that resolution with H.264 MKV files?

did you read the reviews? stuff like it doesn't support 5.1 audio would scare me away. unless you don't have a surround sound system i guess.

I think I might go with

    http://www.amazon.com/Streaming-Media-Player-Wi-Fi-1080p/dp/B005KOZNBW/ref=sr_1_1?s=el...G70000NBK-HESN

Has decent reviews, what you think?

Recommend you spend the extra $$ and get the WDTV. It's a proven high quality product with lots of support and recommendations.

  13. I'm breezing thru this thread, in the hope I may find a replacement for the WDTV media player I got 5+ years ago, ...and GLAD .....I'll just stick with my old WDTV junky for another 5+ years, still I could do with a couple more USB cunties to insert yet more Tb's into.

I paid full wack too, just about sold the car, there is/was a post here ...someplace with a full review, That I bought this sucker off, good recomendation 5/5*

Just watch yourself doing a bios update....Do only if you MUST, easier to rotate the hubble telescope from a 486...lol

  14. you had to get wdtv first generation if you say 5 years back, 2008 or so, I had that one too, sure I got rid of that one as soon as possible but it was a hot cake that time, but slow for more complex H.264, no networking, WDTV Live today is ok ...
