That's kind of a scary thought. Imagine if a counter was used (in the future) as an authentication/limitation on the number of times you could play a disk.

If that could happen it would be bypassed as any copyguard has failed so far(except for cinavia for now)

I'm not sure I would exactly class Cinavia as a raging success either. It's probably very useful at temporarily frustrating a small group of relatively technically illiterate people with certain types of equipment. Invisible to anyone watching material on their PC. Easily dealt with by using (very cheap) media player or hooking up a laptop's HDMI port to the TV for people who want to watch on their TV. I suspect most serious pirates do one of these already. So once again it's an ineffective solution that doesn't impact serious pirates, puts most teens to brief inconvenience until they figure out how to hook their laptop up to the TV, and causes minor irritation to a sub-set of people.

What it does do, moderatley effectively, is devalue newer blu-ray players relative to older units not infected with this rubbish, slowing upgrades and cutting into sales of new bleeding-edge model players.

It wasn't long ago in the video rental industry they were thinking of making discs that would decay and become unplayable after the seal had been broken and exposed for a while here in au ... but on second thoughts they abandoned it when they considered the number of complaints they would receive.

Might look at SurveilStar Activity Monitor

  10. Of course, many DVD players (both hardware and software) have the ability to remember discs and where play stopped playing the last time the disc was in the drive. Presumably they could also remember the date and time the disc was last played too. I don't know of any drives or players that report that information. And it would be limited that particular drive or player. And they can't differentiate between multiple copies of the same title.
