    The Craigslist has a free JVC vcr. (See picture.) Is this one of the good JVC vcrs (with time base corrector)?

    Nope. The JVCs with TBC/DNR all have jog/shuttle wheels to the right of the tape slot.

    Still, a free VCR is a free VCR: if its a good sample of cheap JVC, it might be great at tracking some tricky tapes.

    Agreed. Any free VCR is worth getting unless there is a very good reason not to bother, which there generally hasn't been in my experience.
