    Hi all,

I'm planning on remuxing bluray to either .ts or .mkv. I just need help deciding which one is better.

I plan on using Clown_BD to demux the bluray file and remux into either a .ts file or use mkvmerge to remux to .mkv.

I will keep the main movie file, main English audio file and English subtitles in PGS format.

I will play from my computer using Media Player Classic into my TV via HDMI cable. Or from my external media player into my TV via HDMI.

Does either .mkv or .ts have any specific advantages over the other to make it worth it?

If you are playing on your computer I would use mkv.

ts might work better on some standalone devices.

    You could also use makemkv.

Thanks, but I'm looking for something free so makemkv wouldn't b an option.

So on a computer mkv would b better? As its easier to create a .ts, would there b any advantage of .mkv over .ts?

TS containers can only hold video and audio that is valid for BluRay. MKV can hold essentially anything. To put it in practical terms, AAC audio is invalid for TS but legal for MKV. I would recommend MKV because it has fewer restrictions on what it can hold, but if you are just going to be working from BluRay sources then TS can meet your needs fine. You might just make a test TS file and if t meets whatever playback needs you have, continue on at that point.

Have you ever read the transport stream specification ?
    How do you explain that:
    a. even DVB allows aac audio and some countries use it (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_Video_Broadcasting) ?
    b. vlc supports using transport stream with a variety of formats (http://wiki.videolan.org/MPEG#TS.2C_MPEG2_Transport_Stream) ?

I agree that mkv is the better container (mainly because of lesser container overhead and better content indexing).

Yep. It seems to be a beta/free forever...but if you like it then maybe it's worth buy/donate.

  8. I'm pretty sure Clown_BD won't rip encrypted discs, so you'd need something like AnyDVD HD running in the background decrypting which isn't free. Unless there's a free AnyDVD alternative.

I use HD-DVD/Blu-Ray Stream Extractor and rip the video as MKV but you'dl still need to remux the audio and subtitles when it's done. It's probably very similar to Clown_BD (I haven't used it for a fair while) but once again it requires something like AnyDVD to do the decrypting.
